The Basis of a Family
When someone asks us what the basis of a family is, we are quick to answer “genes.” But what about the couples who choose to adopt a child because they can’t bear one? Are genes and heredity the sole bases for a family to be considered as one? Of course, not. Family means people who look out for each other’s backs. These people are the ones we can trust without the fear of being betrayed, and the ones we feel secure in their presence. A family doesn’t always have to be a father who neglects his parental duties, or a brother who bullies his own sibling. One can have an abusive and neglectful father, brother, sister, or mother and still not feel the essence of a family. So what it is that makes up a family? The basis of a family is true love. This love brings oneness and unity and treats individual differences with love and kindness. There are people who don’t feel this kind of love towards the people whom they’re genetically connected with. They only get to experience this kind of love in their friends, or in certain groups—even in our pets. More often than not, we feel this love in our friends. Hence, we call our closest friends as family. Some of us come from families who stick to the passed-down culture of the past. This culture oozes with so much fear-induced hatred. But some of us are empathetic and try our best to understand what this culture fails to. Despite the consequences of deviating from the hate culture, we are wise enough to stand for what’s right and humane. With this humane perspective, unity becomes lasting and thus the chances of a family to reach a breaking point declines drastically. Always remember that a family is something that radiates with love and support no matter what you are. It never discriminates nor attempts to change the nature of who we are just because our parents’ parents have done so in the past, cutting every opportunity where an individual can flourish magnificently. Rather, it is one that encourages to grow wherever, whenever, and however the individual chooses to. Have you read my article about Building a Home? Read the full article
