Dan teasing the next Bastille album as being “wall-to-wall” sad broke me 😭😭
Highlights of my first Bastille live experience
After 9.5 years of being a Bastille fan, I got to see our triangle boys, right in my own back yard! Not literally, but if you look up just how tiny Malta is you'll see what I mean.
So to offer some context, they had an hour-long gig during a festival which lasted from 16:00 till 02:00. Bastille are virtually unknown in Malta which gave them a 20:30 slot as opposed to Jason Derulo's 00:45 slot (luckily for me).
A few points to ramble on about this golden hour:
They mostly played songs from Bad Blood and Give Me The Future
Was surprised they didn't play Thelma+Louise, GMTF or Those Nights but then again there is only so much you can squeeze in one hour
The crowd was for the large part oblivious to their set, but lost their shit when they played Happier. There was a buzz during Pompeii and a slightly milder buzz during Of The Night. Some guy was belting out the chorus of and dancing to Good Grief in spite of Dan just announcing it as a depressing song
Dan said a few words in Maltese to which I started screaming (I was actually screaming for most of time but these ones were a little louder)
They played this beautifully stripped-down version of Flaws with just Charlie on guitar and Dan singing. The crowd reacted by waving their phone torches. I reacted by sobbing uncontrollably while filming the entire song
During one of the Futurescape interludes/jingles, I heard someone behind me say "Oh my God, I think they hijacked the show"
People kept squinting at my Bastille top and bracelet. I was just happy to wear them with purpose rather than hidden under a lab coat
Dan said something about being a terrible dancer but cannot for the life of me remember when and what exactly he said
There was this shitty LED light illuminating the bar under the platform which messed up most of my photos, so I'll have to go through them properly to see which ones are worth showing off
Bonus: When I got home and showed the videos to my husband, my fast asleep almost three-year-old woke up when Shut Off The Lights came on and proceeded to sing and dance in his cot. Like mother, like son
On a vaguely related note, I was disappointed/surprised to see that none of the guys posted at least one post or story (to date) about this event or about being in Malta. Would have loved to see if they actually spent time here apart from the gig.
TL;DR: I loved it. I want to go again. And again. And again. Preferably with a meet and greet too. I love Bastille.
