Masked Seducer Bats (I’m not making this up)
Apparently there is a species of bat (the wrinkle-faced bat) that masks up and sings in the night to lure a mate. See the above and below photos to see unmasked vs masked.
The bat’s face is covered in wrinkles and ridges, and it raises a furry mask to cover everything but its eyes. And of course, it sings.
Here’s a direct quote from the article in PLoS ONE: “The species has a bizarrely wrinkled face and lacks the characteristic nose leaf”
So, Erik would have indeed been quite the Don Juan had he been born a bat. He’d have had his choice of all the ladies :) Who knew? Sometimes science is stranger than fiction.
