A remnant of wars gone by are huge artillery & flak installations near Murcia & Cartagena in Spain🇪🇸. The battery was built and armed between 1933 and 1936, to provide a defensive belt🧱 to the strategic Plaza de Cartagena by the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. Castillitos was equipped with two shore guns from the British company Vickers-Armstrong, of the 38.1/45 cm (fifteen inch) model. These pieces were powerful enough to fire a nearly one-ton projectile at 35 kilometers. 🤯 Its task was to protect the entrance to the bay of Cartagena together with its twin, the Battery of Ashes located at Cape Negrete, in a crossfire that prevented the entry of hostile elements. During the Spanish civil war, a shot☄️ was fired against the fleet of the rebels in April 1937, although the presence of the fortifications🏛️ was enough to keep any enemy ship away. After the war ended, in 1942 a new firing direction was added and it was studied to support it with strategically placed rangefinders and graphometers, although it was finally abandoned in 1994. Since then the battery was the victim of a progressive deterioration, with its cannons rendered useless, until in 2009 the fortification was renovated and it became open🔓 to visitors. Castillitos is located at a height of 250 meters🏞️, and its facade was built imitating a medieval castle🏰, following a historicist style with influences from eclecticism and modernism, current trends at that time. Once inside the complex, each piece of artillery has an engine room, warehouses for gunpowder and spare parts, and a loading chamber. It also has a cistern. -- #BateriaDeCastillitos #BateriaMilitar #Artillery #HeavyArtillery #MilitaryInstallation #BateriaDelAtalayon #JorelBattery #MurciaTuristica #CartagenaBaterias #BateriasCartagena #Cannons #Castillitos #CastillitosCartagena #PrimoDeRivera #ShoreGuns #VickersArmstrong #VickersArmstrongs #DefensiveFire #Fortifications #SpanishCivilWar #WarInstallation #MilitaryHistory #MilitaryMuscle (at Batería Militar Castillitos) https://www.instagram.com/p/COZxsEOpZdU/?igshid=1aq1xqrpqn7ez
