It's been a very hard week for me! It seems like my depression has been kind of ehhhh lately. So I soaked myself in a lemongrass tea bath w chamomile bath salt and lemon oil! The scent of lemon has always remembered me of my bittersweet childhood and it calms my body now almost immediately. Also, I added a few of tea light candles around the tub and my favorite "heaven" scented incense!
Today I cried in the middle of Lush, but I had a valid reason.
That reason is that they came out with a new bath melt. It's called "Inner Truth." It is a pink and blue heart (handmade apparently) and 100% of the proceeds go towards trans and nonbinary charities (such as the National Center for Transgender Equality). It only costs $6.50 so I highly recommend you buy one if you are able.
I was standing in front of the display (which I included a pic of at the end) when I was just overwhelmed with emotion because I never in a million years thought I'd see something like this in such a popular store. Before I came out, I felt completely alone. I thought no one would ever understand me and I wouldn't be accepted. If you had told me about this in 8th grade I would have laughed in your face because there was no way I'd believe you. Yet here I am.
This is such a big step in the right direction, even though it is only a bath melt. But it's more than that. It's people accepting our community and doing what they can to support us financially and socially. It's the kind of thing that will change a person's life. If I had seen this when I was struggling with my identity and coming out it would have made everything easier. Just knowing that I had supporters out there somewhere would have been amazing. And the fact that they included nonbinary people in their campaign makes everything so much better.
The booklet is also life changing but it's more focused on allies than the community. It shares statistics such as:
- 80% of murdered trans people in the US are trans women of color.
- 30% of trans folk have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives.
- There are 1.4 million adults with a lived trans life experience in the United States.
There is also a glossary at the end of the booklet explaining words such as gender, gender identity, gender expression, and even two-spirit. They explain the different pronouns that trans/nonbinary people use and give tips on how to be a better ally.
I'm sorry that a lot of this is just information and not a lot of my feelings but I feel like it's important to inform you all on how amazing this campaign is. This store is doing an incredible thing and should be recognized for it. This is going to open up people's eyes to new words, identities, and communities that they may not have known about.
I know that this year (and the few before) haven't necessarily gone the way we've wanted it to, but we need to do everything we can to turn it around. Let's speak up and take a stand for what we believe in. Let's not let others tear us down or silence our voices. Let's be ourselves without regret or shame.
And even if all you can do to support us is buy a bath melt, I appreciate it more than you will ever know. In this day and age we need all the help we can get. So here's a shout out to our allies. To the people that shut down ignorant and offensive comments. To the people that correct others on our pronouns. To the people that march with us and help us get the freedom to speak our minds. To the people that comfort us after bad days and remind us that our identities are valid. To the people that support us relentlessly and with all of their hearts. We love you. And we thank you for everything you do for us.
