Batman #262 || Scanned at 300dpi
I just love this set of panels, it shows us Jonathan Crane at his most vulnerable. He’s looking up at Batman, but he doesn’t SEE Batman. He sees the bullies who tormented him in his youth. You can feel the pain in his voice.
Is he sorry? Not by a long shot.
But he IS afraid.

“You gonna beat him with a walkie-talkie?”
Crane, you need better henchmen.

Is it just me or does Jonathan look especially sad here? Imagine how much it must’ve hurt him to be continuously bullied for his appearance all throughout his life. Choosing to become The Scarecrow was the ultimate act of defiance and spite, forever to be known as a symbol of poverty and fear.

Every time I look at this panel out of context, I like to pretend that Scarecrow is gliding down a Slip ‘N Slide.
