The idea of the batfam, robins especially, finding violence between the mentor and mentee so normalized that to be lacking it in a relationship is seen as inadequacy... of course batman hurts them, why wouldn't he? That's how to make sure they're being trained well enough.
If a Robin cannot face Batman and genuinely withstand and win, has Batman trained them right at all? If a Robin isn't getting hurt trying, is Batman really doing enough to make sure they're prepared for the world?
Bruce loves his kids. Batman loves Robin. But what sort of love in Gotham doesn't prepare for pain?
