Oh, he knew that face. He could have recognised that toothy maw from a mile off, just from how many times he had spotted that selfsame silhouette in his own dreams. Yes, there was no pause or doubt about it. This was, without the need for another glance or reiteration, definitely the monstrous form of the Batter, the body that the purifying man took once the Lamenter had switched sides.

The creature that reminded him of his betrayal just by existing. The fact that this was not even his Batter, not his crocodilian duck to feel guilt for was irrelevant, because either way this was still a Batter, and the pain that would have already hit him upon just seeing the normal form was increased tenfold upon seeing this one.
