Battery Weed, Staten Island, NY. Even as we keep advancing the past is always just around the corner to remind us of what we were.
“In all likelihood many decades from now, the day will come when New York will no longer be the most powerful city in the world. At that time, the citizens of this mighty metropolis, like modern Athenians looking up at the Acropolis, will be reminded of the years of power and glory by the great structures that serve as exclamation points on Manhattan’s skyline.” (Smithsonian, March 2004) This photo symbolizes the historical importance of New York City. On Staten Island, I was looking down at Battery Weed, built in the 19th century to protect the city. Fort Wadsworth, an especially scenic location, is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. It is also used by the Coast Guard. (Photo taken on March 25, 2018)
