Santico Art Hotel & Hostel in Batthyány tér, Budapest
I visited a friend who frequently stays, and sometimes acts as concierge, at this cool and interesting Hotel and Hostel, which has 17 rooms ranging from studios,to 1 bedroom, private rooms, with private baths and some small apartments (with small kitchen and table/chairs) with lots of beds--a double bed bunk bed in one, as well as rooms with shared baths. It is just a short walk from the Batthyány tér Metro station, and it is upstairs from the Vegan restaurant I wrote about a few days ago. I just love the funky artwork on the walls of the upstairs balcony area and downstairs courtyard. There are refrigerators to store food for most (or many) of the rooms. He mentioned prices, but I’m not clear on them. But they are well below the normal price of a hotel. I know other friends who stayed at different hostels in private rooms and paid about $50 a night about five years ago. This hostel is about the same, I think, though summertime is peak season, and prices are higher.
The windows are double pane old-school windows with big window ledges. When I lived in Hungary, and stayed at a physical therapy rehabilitation facility in Budapest during the winter, we would put our food out on the ledge to keep it cold. And when I got home, I bought ice, and put it on the ledge to stay frozen since my little apartment fridge had no freezer. So there is another advantage of these old fashioned windows and ledges.
This is located at 1011 Budapest 01, Iskola Utcas 31--below the castle in the first district. Balázs is the owner and proprietor.
