The original Battle House Hotel opened in 1852. It had been the brainchild of James, John, and Samuel Battle, thus its name. That hotel caught fire in 1905 and burned to the ground. An even more spectacular Battle House Hotel reopened on the same spot in 1908. The new hotel had a beer garden on the roof and all the modern conveniences.
