Here's a closer look at the four blades from last night's @newenglandschoolofmetalwork #battleofthebladesmiths They were forged, heat treated and handles in under 2 hours. It's a sweet grouping: Kentish Seax by @sunandstarsforge Recurve Americana Fighter by @joshaweston 1850s Coffin Handled Scottish Seax by @macevitale and Classic Fighter with Forged Guard by @rhea_knives . This a tough challenge that requires some pre-planning, being able to stick to a plan and managing time and stress. There's not time to waste but there are steps that can't be shortsheeted too much. The big ones are: managing blade temperature to minimize grain growth, thermocycling, tempering actually having a handle on and making sure there is a sharp edge. We all made it through, no crack, no breaks, no dull blades and no missed parameters.
