The Batture seekks to win over skeptics with gradual progress | Enterprise Information
The preliminary plan for The Batture proposed making a retail hall carved into 5 metropolis “blocks,” with eight buildings that might be become eating places and bars. A road lined with 400 parking areas would span the size of the district and run parallel to Leake Avenue. ghost division
That's not a lake in the background. That's the fucking Mississippi River. #batture #levee (at Batture)
This eccentric, sassy lady died last week. She was a regular market shopper who came, without fail, for iced coffee, produce and community. She was a torch singer in the French Quarter in past days. She was never, ever without her red lipstick.
From this NPR story* on her Batture community: "Jean Brady Hendricks is 88. She wears long dresses and gaudy jewelry, and rides a pink Schwinn. Her home is a ramshackle thing swallowed by river vines and visited by night creatures for whom she puts out cat food. She is happy here."
She will be missed. Market will be a little less interesting without her. It is the people, both vendors and shoppers, who make the market one of my favorite places to be.
*you should read or listen to this story about the Batture, as it is endlessly fascinating and is a glimpse at one of the most interesting communities in the New Orleans area.
