Lecture 7 / what I found  

In the lecture, I could explore bauhaus style and rethink about the essence of design. This ideology has affected design and designers globally since now.  How could have Bauhaus influenced our life so far?

The Bauhaus was operated in Germany from 1919 to 1933. This organization had achieved a lot in a short space of time. The most interesting aspect of this ideology is focusing on craftsmanship. Walter Gropius said “Architects, sculptors, painters, we must all get back to craft!” Furthermore, they made a framework for design education. I was impressed by this diagram because it delivers fundamental and holistic methodology of experiencing design. It enables to acquire overall knowledge of materials, form, and environment.  

Along side such curriculum, designers, architect, artists focused on the essence of design and created objects more efficiently and universally rather than just making objects simply without purpose.

Their design looks simple but has intensive, implicative, effective and practical aspects of design.

A constant obsession about pure form and material demonstrates authenticity and honesty. Also this ideology emphasises relationship between environment and object itself.

After the lecture, I was immersed in Josef Albers. Homage to the square, his painting series, shows interaction between different colours and simple variation of square. It delivers the mood of whole structure without any words.

‘They all are of different palettes, and, therefore, so to speak, of different climates. Choice of the colours used, as well as their order, is aimed at an interaction - influencing and changing each other forth and back. Thus, character and feeling alter from painting to painting without any additional ‘hand writing’ or, so-called, texture. Though the underlying symmetrical and quasi-concentric order of squares remains the same in all paintings – in proportion and placement – these same squares group or single themselves, connect and separate in many different ways.’(reference: https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/albers-study-for-homage-to-the-square-t02312)

In 2019, cities, museums and foundations across Germany celebrated the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus. Even they made an application ! Broad spectrum of design such as pottery, weaving, theatre, graphic, furniture and architecture shows how we consider design exists with environment.

As Karen said, It’s hard to find female designers in that period. Gropius believed women incapable of thinking in three dimensions. Therefore, women were allowed to do “women’s work” such as textiles and weaving. In that sense, we remember Josef Albers, Marcel Breur, Wassily Kandinsky and so on. But we cannot ignore the historical background and culture at that time. Gropius wanted to offer education women too, but his belief in different ability of sex leaded limitation of female works.

I want to discover some female designers and modern application of Bauhaus. It was really interesting topic, and I enjoyed a lot this lecture! :-)
