Bugarach

This film was highly entertaining. The story was all over the place and each of the characters were very interesting. Some other students believe the entire film was fake or photoshopped, but I still enjoyed it. It was different kind of documentary that was showing a different view of the “2012 end of the world” phenomenon. I also think this documentary did a great job at showing how the media can blow things out of proportion and the word can spread so quickly. Media is highly influential and many people don’t realize how much media influences their lives.

Shorts friday

All these shorts had labor as their theme. Whether it was lack of labor or modern labor or old school labor. It was all related. My favorite was the short called hacked circuit. It was a film about how sounds are made for films but it was done in an abstract walk around the block. I also enjoyed 3 acres in Detroit and the idea of trying to start farming for people who need opportunities. An odd film was called cathedrals and was about some abandoned city in China. It was very eerie.

Nicotine, Mercury, and Matters of the Heart

I started the film fest off with "Pablo's Winter" by Director Chico Pereira. Done in black and white, it was a very subtle film that focused on Pablo, a former coal miner who now has lung issues. The director's use of quiet scenes and still moments made me feel like I was alongside Pablo throughout his day to day. He was slowing down, in the winter of his life and yet he wasn't concerned about that. At first glance, the close up shots of him smoking and eating with his wife could make him seem cold and disconnected, but when you see him dancing with her and the quiet familiarity they have with each other, you realize that they've accepted their life together and that they are comfortable where they are. Had this movie been in color, the feeling I got of the town and the people would have been missed.
