You know the way Toei was willing to give Vamdemon a facelift in Ghost Game and even touched up Piemon's design, I would have prayed they'd give Jokermon a little facelift too but nope. He's as hideous as he was in his Hunters Debut.

He's voiced by Iwata Mitsuo (not the same guy who voiced him in Hunters), that's GG's Clockmon. Okay sure

Ah, so the CEO Guy was sending Digimon into concentration camps to be killed. And Jokermon and the Human were part of... something..? Trying to stop it..? Huh...

The plot is thickening, I'm very interested to see where this story arc is going

Honestly though, good enough episode. Could have been mildly better if they had turned the Crazy Murder Clown trope down maybe just a smidge, and even better if they had given Jokermon a facelift. But that's just me lmao

In the end, I am kinda happy to have seen my obscure fave Digimon star in the show again, especially considdering Jokermon was a Hunters Contest Digimon, not one I ever actually expected to see again

Also, it's funny... Piemon is often one of the first Ultimate level Digimon (though usually not The First) the main characters have to somehow overcome (this happened in V-Tamer, Adventure, Survive and Ghost Game). Obviously we've seen a ton of Perfect level Digimon in Beat Break already, but this was the episode where Tomoro was able to unlock Perfect evolution for Gekkoumon more reliably, and so Jokermon was the first Perfect-level they had to learn to fight one-on-one, so like. Jokermon kinda kept that funny, unintentional role Piemon has had in parts of the franchise here. I dunno that's funny to me

Yeah, alright episode! Excited to see where the plot will be going from here!

Awakening from my eternal slumber to react to the first episode of Beat Break. As expected, spoilers under the cut

Quickly before we start; I make no promise I'll react to each episode of BB like I did with Ghost Game, I might, I might not, it just depends on how much I end up enjoying this series if at all

ANYWAY LESGO

Oh fuck you they used the Digivice noise to start the thing oh my fucking god fuck you you can't punch in the face like that with EMOTIONS

Oh my god we got Angoramon (and Gaomon) aka Kazuya Nakai as the narrator, oh that's fun. Like as a One Piece enjoyer it's funny to have Roronoa Zoro as the narrator when Hiroaki Hirata aka Sanji was the narrator for the Adventure franchise specifically, but also yeah, I miss Angoramon and Angoramon did do the "Digimon Analyzer" bits early into the series, so it is kinda like he's back to do proper narration this time. Point being; I like the narrator VA pick here, good choise

The OP is alright, visually nice, but it didn't like, particularly wow me or interest me (like how FACTION with it's unusual alternative music was very interesting and fun) nor is it particularly to my tastes, like definitely not an earworm. Like it's good, but yeah did not do much for me. There is a possibility it could grow on me though

ANYWAY ONTO THE ACTUAL EPISODE JHSDJFHG

OH WE'RE JUST STARTING WITH AN EVOLUTION SEQUENCE OH HELL YEAH RIGHT INTO IT LETS FUCKING GO

Very simple sequence, I respect that (also it is an Adult evolution, Perfect+Ultimate might get flashier), also like. It's funny, the evolution gave me Savers Feelings and that is not shocking at all since we have OG Savers Staff on Beat Break (was it the writer? I think it's the writer? Can't be bothered to check but there's someone from Savers working on BB)

Also it's funny, Makoto sounds exactly the way I thought he would sound, like that is the exact VA I expect him to have lmao

I do want to note, the art design for the dataspace is quite nice actually. Like we've seen the rundown ruins in Hunters and Ghost Game, we've seen the hyper sterile white space in Adventure, Appmon had it's kinda basic datascape (and Psi felt like an in-between the last two) Here it feels very Tron? The colors at least give heavy 80s Nostalgia, and it's fun, it looks really nice

This is the part where I learn you can't take screenshots on Crunchyroll anymore and thus can't actually show you what I'm talking about. >:( I'm sure there's a way around this but I can not be bothered to figure that out right now

I was just gonna comment that Kyo is so ominous and spoopy with his cold stare, wondering What's Up With That, but. Can't share screenshots so boo. Anyway good for him to saving the day in the nick of time and bringing snacks too, how nice

Now I know the Sapotama (interesting localization? It seems it should be short for Support Tamago, so they could've localized it as just HelpEgg or something) is just a replacement for how we use and rely on smart phones in our current society, but god does this thing seem so (unintentionally) dystopian. It's like you put Siri/Alexa/whatever on a Roomba and it just talks to you whenever and follows you and does phone things. Also it reacts to a chip that's been inserted into you??? Like oh I don't like that, oh this is 3 seconds away from becoming real dystopian shit

I love how we're learning stuff about Tenma through this Sapotama Incident, that's so fun

You know, I kinda wanted to comment something about some bits in the opening reminding me of FFVII's opening section, like the Midgar bit specifically (but if you threw it into a blender with Bleach Opening 1 and sprinkled Digimon on top). But when you add the lowkey dystopian vibes that come from the Sapotama and then introduce us to the Shangri-La Egg?? Oh this is some Midgar shit actually LMAO

So did Chiropmon at all pick up on Starmon being an actual Digimon ooor

So short, snappy, and not even used every episode? It is nice and refreshing! But also yeah, getting that nice (first?) group evo 11 episodes in? Also nice! It's been earned!

I can not put into words the respect I have for the writer for going here. For being so full of anger about the state of our world, and wanting to express that through this children's anime specifically. That is something most people would be too afraid to do, lest they be political or something and something kids shouldn't have to see.

I have nothing but respect for Beat Break for having things to say, no, scream and shout at the viewers, because things aren't right. Good job Toei, you did good. Yamaguchi, you did good.

Also oh god. Look I was already delighted to see Ludomon as we haven't really seen this (newer) Digimon in any of the anime yet, so to see them in kind of a rival role was fun. Oh no. It's not fun anymore. This is just tragic. My soul is breaking.

For the sake of reference; I've been so shocked by this that I've been sitting here in horror for the past 30 minutes. Like how am I supposed to finish this episode, man. I guess pretty easily since I'm not in a warzone, huh.

Like BB has opinions and thoughts it wants to share (like Makoto coming from a place of privilege not understanding the pain those worse off go through), but I wish the series could do more in these episodes than just Announce it's message at the Epic Climax of the episode and leave it there. It's like each episode is a huge buildup for a guy to stand up on a podium to share and opinion and then walk away, and it just... It falls flat for me

Episode 18, The Price of Freedom

YYYYYEAAAHHH it's Commandramon! :D Oh I've wanted to see this guy in the series for so long, hell yeah! Also the way they've decided to animate his skin texture is so interesting (definitely easier/more convenient than trying to do like actual camo texture that's shaped to his body, but also adds to the idea Commandramon is trying to blend into surroundings by not being so static)

OH COMMANDRAMON CAN LITERALLY GO INVISIBLE, OH THAT'S SO COOL (and kinda fucking OP for a CHILD???)

The rest of the episode really had me going like

I am not immune to them using the opening theme for the climax, that shit always goes so fucking hard it was great

And I actually was like "wait is Kyo actually gonna do it? Wait then why the fuck does Tomoro unlock Perfect in the next episode" aaaand Kyo gets This Treatment

Yup, great episode! The like, set-up portion felt maybe a bit clunky but it was a good episode!

Episode 24, Overlapping Beats

I do feel like BeatBreak was kind of able to "prove itself" to me during this arc and I'm definitely curious to see where the Gift Arc will go

Okay let's catch up on Beat Break, episodes 3-10!

Oh, I hadn't realized CR uses they/them for Gekkoumon. We love a non-binary creechure

As much as I love the goody two-shoe protags like Taiki, Haru and Hiro, it is actually nice to have a protag like Tomoro who is emotional and rash, like a normal, cranky teenager, it's a nice change of pace

Aaand our AR Field has a new name, 'tis Mirror World this time! It is kinda funny to see how many new names this franchise is willing to come up with for what is essentially the same thing

You know, I do really like that Tomoro wants to go for The Nuclear Option and just fucking kill Fangmon. Like I don't agree with that, but I like seeing such an extreme, negative take from the main fucking character. Also ooooo Tomoro's Nasty Vibes are affecting Gekkoumon! Oooooo! It may not go particularly far this episode but it might happen again later, oooo

Episode 4!

Ah yes, I'm seeing it now. Tomoro's name may begin with a "to" instead of "ta", and he may be wearing glasses instead of goggles, but he is indeed a gogglehead, and Reina is the Yamato to Tomoro's Taichi (I don't mean that super literally by the way, I think Tomoro and Reina fit the archetypes Very Very Loosely in a deconstructed way, at least right now). I see the vision now.

I knew there was a Pandamon coming up, I lowkey hoped they'd be voiced by Koushirou's OG VA since they voiced a Pandamon in Frontier, but alas, no luck. But considdering The Vibe they're going for with this Pandamon, this was a good choise. I already love this damn bear and I just met them lmao

Maybe I'm just too used to not paying too much attention to the subtitles so I just didn't fully realize it until now, but? Beat Break seems to ONLY use they/them for Digimon? Based, love it

Oh shit who-- welp Kenkimon just got deleted, RIP, thank god you had no personality

Ohh so the Astamon I had seen posts about is the bad guy's partner, okay. Like I had seem some promo screenshots but didn't bother to read the context, and because I couldn't remember if Astamon was Adult or Perfect, I had kinda assumed they'd be Chiropmon's Adult evo (which could've been great for my "Chirop will evolve into Vamdemon" propaganda) but nah lmao

Episode 6!

Kind of a bog standard episode, don't have much to say here, 'twas fine, the Pandamon duology was arrite. Though I actually do really appreciate having like a story that lasted TWO episodes instead of a one-and-done standard MotW episode, that's already more interesting for me and far more enjoyable to watch.

Episode 7!

Oh lovely we start with a tiny PSA about not microwaving eggs lest they eggsplode on you (a very real danger, go watch Ann Readon on YouTube if you haven't already)

OHHH WE GOT LORE!! WE KNOW WHO THE (presumed to be) VILLIANS IN THE OPENING ARE!! WE GOT AN ELITE FOUR (but it's five) >8O

The Digimon silhouettes are hard to make out, one of them could be a Bloom Lordmon OR a Lilamon, but that one on the bottom left is totally the Gokuwmon the crew is searching for, huh (since Gokuw is a Perfect then the other Digimon are probably also Perfects, guess that's a point for Lilamon then)

Y'know what. Savers Writer, this week's MotW is a BlackGaogamon, yeah that Elite Silhouette is a Lilamon

Beat Break episode 2, lesgo

I don't think I mentioned this during episode 1 reaction, but I am very delighted that the opening essentially confirms to us that BB is going to have somekind of a villian organization/group that Glowing Dawn are going up against. As much as I enjoyed Hunters and Ghost Game (and even Psi though to a much lesser degree), my biggest gripe with all those seasons was how none of them had a clear antagonist/villian to go up against. Like maybe it is just because I grew up with the 90's Sailor Moon, PokéAni Season 1 and Adventure, but having the main cast interact with The Main Villian and/or a high ranking henchman each episode kind of builds up tension and a relationship with the characters. A villian that only lurks in the shadows and shows its ugly mug at the very end while the cast is too busy fighting random monsters of the week for the whole run of the series just... it's not that thrilling, y'know? So yeah, Beat Break's opening showing us that we do infact have not just one villian, but also henchmen is kind of a relief, we haven't really had that since Appmon (and while it's been a while, I do vaguely remember wishing Appmon had its villians be a bit more involved too). Of course BB can still completely fumble their villians but! We must remain hopeful!

Alright, so Hitomi from episode 1 didn't get the mysterious Cold Heart as a result of Tomoro accidentally messing with her Sapotama, it was just that the scent of Tomoro's ePulse attracted the Hyemon to her and he ate her ePulse. So Tomoro doesn't have an eerie power that hurts others, that's nice to know

OH OH IS THAT THE FUCKING, WHAT'S HIS FACE, JOURNEY TO THE WEST DIGIMON. Yes I had to go look it up because I could not remember his name, IT'S GOKUWMON ISN'T IT

OHHHH the crew doesn't know who he is!! :O So we wouldn't get the info/name dropped anyway huh? Heehee good thing I checked then

I am curious to find out what happened to Tomoro's parents, like did the kids get abandoned by the parents, did the parents get isekai'd, are they with the villian organization, are they just dead??

I do kinda love how Tomoro's reaction to getting lowkey invited into the Glowing Dawn was a big ol' "fuck you"; like the kid's overwhealmed by everything, so being hesistant makes sense. I feel like your average kids show shounen protag would be very enthusiastic and jump at the opportunity to save their family at any cost, so Tomoro getting ANGRY just feels kinda refreshing? I like that, and I kinda love how he does not get along with Gekkoumon either lmao

The noise I just made laughing at the... Mushroom Gang introducing themselves. Oh my god. Holy shit. Yeah that's stupid and funny

Of course, despite not really getting along, Tomoro is still kindhearted enough that he'll save Gekkoumon. That's good kid <3

Chipromon is so cute though. A lil bat guy <3 Wolvermon asking them who's gonna get blazed next... Oh yeah I love their personality <3 (Also, forgot to mention this earlier but Cougarmon is such a furry fuck I love him)

Ah, and now we have figured out a way to force Tomoro into joining Glowing Dawn despite him not wanting to. Ngl I kinda prefer that over Tomoro being So Good Hearted And Brave that he volunteers to join so he can save his brother, like it's a small thing but I think it adds personality and it's just a little different that makes thing feel a smidge fresh.

Nice episode! Very standard, but it's the begining of a show like this so it's fine. I do actually love how the MOTW combat scene was actually super short, the episode focusing on the plot and character development more. Of course the episode did also start with combat so that kinda compensates, but still, BB being at least a little bit willing to not strictly follow the MOTW episode formula rules is nice.

Next episode does seem a bit standard but it's fine, early into the show etc etc
