The idea is being floated by BC Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau, who argues the model could lead to a better work-life balance for British Columbians.

On Thursday, Furstenau pitched a pilot project that would offer businesses tax credits if they shifted to 32-hour work weeks for employees, without cutting their pay.

Participating businesses would share data with the province on metrics such as productivity, revenue and employee satisfaction.

Furstenau pointed to recent four-day work week trials around the world, which she said have shown not just strong employee satisfaction, but better business outcomes. [...]

My personal ratings for this BC leaders debate (which you can watch over on Global or listen to here or search "The Mike Smyth Show" wherever you listen to podcasts) are:

Sonia Furstenau (Greens) - I found myself agreeing with her the most and I found she brought up the best points (especially regarding the reality of needing to address the root causes of our ongoing societal issues, like poverty and profiteering, for example)

David Eby (NDP) - He seemed to often agree with Sonia's points (me too!), but he also seemed much more focused on trying to catch Rustad in one of the many areas where Rustad can be called out on (because Rustad is one of those politicians), if only Rustad was someone that ever addressed what he was being asked directly to address

John Rustad (Cons) - I don't understand how people like this manage to always be in the running for leadership spots at ANY level in modern society, let alone at a provincial level, but I guess that's the type of modern society we still live in — a bunch of people clutching desperately at the ways of the old 'Us vs Them' world (the same old world where we just had to have a national day of truth & reconciliation because of how dark life can get when capitalist interests are put in charge of setting the rules for how the game of life gets played).

Of course, none of these people are who people in the HWY 95/A area will be casting votes for, so hopefully we'll start getting some local area debates (with video/audio 'listen later' options) to pass along as well!

Petition argues NDP has failed to follow through on its promises to protect old -growth forests

Environmentalists and the B.C. Green party are demanding the provincial government implement the promises it made to preserve B.C.’s forests, starting with putting an immediate end to old-growth logging.

The group Stand.earth presented Green Leader Sonia Furstenau with a petition containing 150,000 signatures on the steps of the legislature in Victoria Monday.

Furstenau promised to deliver the box full of signatures to the house when it resumes in October.

“On a day like today, when we’ve received the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, saying this is ‘code red’ for humanity, one of our best defences against climate change in British Columbia should be our forests, and in particular our old-growth forests,” said Furstenau.

Leader Sonia Furstenau says government is failing to take big steps needed to protect public from third wave.

The BC Greens are calling for the province to radically alter its pandemic response and aim for COVID Zero, making the two-member caucus the first Canadian party outside Atlantic Canada to call for strict measures to eliminate the virus.

The party said the NDP government has fumbled the variant-driven third COVID wave in B.C., a sharp departure from more than a year of generally multi-partisan support for the province’s pandemic strategy.

“We need to see the premier of British Columbia, not pointing the finger at young people or anybody else but taking accountability and responsibility for what is happening in this province under his watch,” Leader Sonia Furstenau told The Tyee.

A year ago there was a sense of unity and a common goal, she said. “But pretty much since the election, instead of a proactive approach from the government, we are seeing an increasingly reactive approach.”

“It has been really disappointing that instead of anticipating and being prepared for this third wave, we have just let it arrive in this province.”

Andrew Weaver (former leader of the BC Green Party, now sitting as an independent MLA) just went mask off on Twitter, confirming two things: that the BC Greens under his leadership were an economically conservative party and that he’s an asshole (insulting Sonia Furstenau, a BC Green MLA elected under his watch and a candidate for the new party leader). For context, he was responding to Furstenau saying she supports a 4-day workweek in BC On the positive side, it sounds like the BC Greens are going to start moving to the left now that he’s gone as party leader?

Andrew Weaver says he was prepared to force an early election over LNG but Olsen, Furstenau weren’t

The former leader of the B.C. Green Party lashed out at his former caucus members over Twitter on Saturday, saying they were not prepared to topple the government when he was.

Andrew Weaver left the B.C. Green Party in January to sit as an Independent MLA in the legislature. He made the announcement in October and said he would not run in the next election.

He said at the time that sitting as an Independent would allow him to balance politics with some health issues, but he remained committed to the stability of B.C.'s minority government.

Since 2017, the Greens and the NDP have had an agreement to support one another in a minority government.

On Saturday though, Weaver was critical of the two MLAS he previously sat with in caucus.

Cowichan MLA defeats Cam Brewer and Kim Darwin in the race to replace former leader Andrew Weaver

Sonia Furstenau is the new leader of the British Columbia Green Party.

The MLA for Cowichan Valley defeated challenger Cam Brewer, garnering 2,428 votes to Brewer's 2,127 in the second round of the ranked ballot election.

Kim Darwin, the third candidate in the race, was eliminated after the first round of voting.

In her victory speech Furstenau took aim at Premier John Horgan and rumours that the NDP leader is planning to call a snap election for the fall.

"To John Horgan I say you have a responsibility to govern, not play politics," she said. "This is not the time to dissolve the government ... to grab more power for yourself."

Furstenau replaces Andrew Weaver, who stepped aside in January to sit as an independent in the legislature.

Greens say the move will not affect balance of power in the B.C. Legislature

Former B.C. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver is leaving the party to sit as an independent MLA starting Jan. 20 because of family health problems.

The move is not expected to immediately affect the balance of power held by the minority NDP government, which is supported by a confidence-and-supply agreement (CASA) with the Greens.

"Sitting as an independent will allow me to better balance work with the competing health demands affecting my family," said Weaver in a statement. "I remain committed to the stability of this minority government and CASA."

On Jan. 6, Weaver stepped down as B.C. Green Party leader after a reported health scare.

The 58-year-old will continue to represent the riding of Oak Bay-Gordon Head in Victoria.
