Hush was this mighty club that would have the dancer upon the dancefloor thinking they were raving their brains out in a super warehouse. Except it was this underground, literally in a basement, micro club. I cannot recall the max capacity of the room but I want to say less than 200. That didn’t stop people from raging out. Didn’t stop world class talent from storming the DJ booth either. A lot of heads passed through. The place had heart and heaps of it. Also variety. Typically open from Thursday to Sunday, each night had its own sound. From soulful house, to bleeping techno, drum n’ bass to full on progressive. It wasn’t one thing, it was everything. Reminiscing about the venue is easy. I had amazing moments in this barely lit room. People let loose. I let loose. It got loose in there. Was about to make a Grey Goose joke but meh. The bar was centre of the room attraction and no matter who was manning the Wells everything was getting poured and digested as if it may be the last time...for them, for you and me. There was also these absolutely mental dust bunnies upon the pipes on the ceiling. As soon as the room was illuminated for closing, the dancefloor empty, I would stare long and hard at these puffs of science and wonder exactly how long they’d been there. Were they alive? It was really something to behold. This worded description barely touches what the hell I’m talking about. Archaic dust bunnies that housed a community of fuck knows what. A resident DJ Brent Carmichael had me out in 2002(?) and from then I played the place 3 or 4 times a year, a tradition continued by Jack, the clubs operator. Like most venues of legend, Hush shuttered in 2015. The island hasn’t been the same since or so I’ve been told... This weeks #TBT is timely because tomorrow night I’m headed back to Victoria, B.C. for The Hush reunion party hosted by the mighty @djmarlee The venue may be different but I suspect that the energy and spirit will be equally enthusiastic towards the music and the party. #tbt #areyoureadyforit #edm #bcraves #tourlife (at Victoria, British Columbia)
