it’s strange how those simple words threaten to rip him open from the inside when just a few short months ago, he would have welcomed them. but then again, isn’t that only a distraction from the truth ? steve peers at the grainy image of their sleeping son - finally safe - before he sets the monitor down again on the kitchen table. head bowed, he grasps the edge of the table with both hands, leaning the heft of his body against it.
“ neither do i. but ... i don’t know where we go from here. ” he isn’t used to this; everyone thinks that he’s the man with the plan, the one who always knows how to save the day. but no one can understand the stark terror that dogged him for days after chris was taken ... no one except her.
when he speaks, it’s nothing more than the solemn prayer of a man too recently broken: “ tell me what to do, peggy. ”
