when conrad got back to cousins, the house wasn't empty anymore, but it was all wrong. the furniture was in the wrong place, a lot of it in the wrong rooms. everything was boxed up, but aunt julia at least had the movers mark their names on the boxes. the summer house would always be susannah's house. even though she was gone, he could still feel her magic in that house with them. he didn't feel that magic when they walked in to find the whole place gutted. it felt haunted, and not in a good way. the bedrooms were last, and he ripped the bandaid off. everything in his mom's room had to go back exactly where it was before, right down to the afghan she kept angled over the corner of her bed. he didn't move on until everything was exactly where it was supposed to be. he unpacked his own room next, then laurel's, steven's, jeremiah's, and . . . belly's.
aside from his mom's room, @be1ly 's was the hardest, not because he didn't know where everything went, but because his heart was still breaking. it was important that the house was finished though, so he got to work. some of the clothes she left behind were hung up in the closet, and some were folded and put more neatly into her drawers than she would have ever done for herself. he almost took his cousins rowing shirt back but realized he didn't want it anymore. the memories that shirt stirred up . . . he kept going until everything was back in it's place. junior mint was sitting on her dresser, but he couldn't bring himself to replace the glass unicorn. he remembered buying it for her like it was yesterday. her smile was impossible to forget. he was still holding the figurine when he heard a noise behind him, and turned to look over his shoulder. belly was standing there in the doorway to her room. he put the unicorn down and walked toward the door. "i didn't know you guys would be back so soon. everything should be back where it was before. i was just leaving," he lied as he tried to pass her in the doorway, wanting to be anywhere but there as all the oxygen was sucked out of the room.
