The authors state it is a result of locally focused waste control strategies, and what Australians can do when they band together.

“A recently-completed scientific survey found that plastic on Australian beaches has fallen by 29% since the last survey in 2013.

The authors state it is a result of well-executed and locally focused waste control strategies, as well as an example of what Australians can do when they band together.

Organized by the Australian national science agency, this year’s survey included 562 new survey plots across 32 local government entities, with an emphasis on gathering data on which methods implemented by the local officials were the most successful.

“Our research set out to identify the local government approaches that have been most effective in reducing coastal plastics and identify the underlying behaviors that can lead to the greatest reduction in plastic pollution,” said lead researcher Dr. Kathryn Willis.

“We were really surprised and excited to also find that there was on average 29 per cent less plastic on our beaches than in 2013 when similar surveys were conducted.

The strategies were divided into planned behavior such as educational programs and recycling guides, economic strategies, crime prevention such as closer monitoring of illegal dumping and other such activities.

Economic strategies were found to have the biggest impact. More economic waste management strategies led to comparatively cleaner coastlines.

“For example, household collection services, where there are multiple waste and recycling streams, makes it easier for community members to separate and discard their waste appropriately,” said CSIRO researcher and paper co-author, Dr. Denise Hardesty.

“Our research showed that increases in waste levies had the second largest effect on decreases in coastal plastic pollution. Local governments are moving away from a collect and dump mindset to a sort and improve approach.”

The research also found that municipalities that didn’t update their waste control measures over long periods tended to have dirtier coasts.” -via Good News Network, 11/10/23

🌊It is estimated that 5.25 TRILLION pieces of trash are in our ocean! That’s a lot of trash, considering we shouldn’t even have any trash in our oceans!🐚

🌊It is just unbelievable how much trash we just dump into the ocean! Over 100,000,000 sea creature die per year due to trash in the ocean and getting tangled up in it too! Even if you don’t want to donate to ocean conservancies, at least keep in mind that every time you throw away trash, it will either go to a land fill or the ocean. So make sure you keep that in mind before you throw away things you can reuse or recycle!🌊

Joined a beach cleanup this morning at the old fishing port not too far from Geopark Center. 今朝は日沖港での海岸清掃に参加。

This year, no big typhoons hit this area, so we didn’t have too terrible litter problem here. 今年は大きな台風が来なかったので、ここの海ゴミもさほどではなく。

But still the litter we picked up was enough to fill the truck.

When I do beach cleanup here at this place, I always enjoy observing igneous rocks and coastal plants on the beach. ワタシ、ここで海岸清掃する時はいつも、火成岩や海岸植物をチェックするのも楽しみなんです。

Hope this fishing port stays clean for several months... まあ数か月くらいは、このキレイな状態を保ってほしいもんです...。

Megan Thee Stallion Led A Beach Cleanup In Santa Monica After Her Climate Change Pledge

Megan Thee Stallion dubbed this summer the “Hot Girl Summer” following the release of her record Fever, and she’s taking the label seriously. The “Realer” rapper took a pledge to stay environmentally conscious and use her platform to raise awareness of rising global temperatures and climate change. Hot Girl Meg’s first formal environmentally conscious event was a beach clean up in Santa Monica.

On Thursday, Meg announced the scheduled cleanup to her fans on social media. “Hey Hotties I’m having the first ever HOTTIE BEACH CLEAN UP in Cali June 6th at the Santa Monica pier. Be there at 3pm ! Houston we’re next!”

The rapper shared a video showing the hundreds of Hotties (the official name of Meg fans) who showed up to clean Santa Monica Beach. “The Cali hotties literally cleaned everything so fast!” Meg tweeted. “I had so much fun and drove the boat with everyone comment what beach needs cleaning.” (source)

Thinking about the “5 things that make you happy” post, I was trying to express my list visually. I’m not very visual.

Number 1: the sea. I love the sea. I respect the sea. I would marry the sea if I were poly. See my Ocean tag. Also see this.

2. Weather where I can wear things like this. (It is currently 8 am and 95/31 degrees). See #fashion

3. Science. I love that there is still so much stuff to figure out. See #science tag. The photo below is from this site.

4. Cooking. I love cooking for others. My efforts are usually posted under the Sunday Dinner tag. Today I am having friends over and serving them fennel and tarragon sausages that I made a week ago. (The photo is bitterballen that I made recently.)

5. Travel. I love that we have such an incredible world to explore. I took the photo below from a bullet train in Japan so I didn’t have time to get the settings right, but I love the old lady farmer, the truck with the harvest, the golden sun. It’s one of my all time favourites.
