Let’s Take a Walk: Beach Dunes in Alabama

Pedestrian traffic can be a big problem for some wildlife habitat, like the beach dunes in Fort Morgan, Alabama. The beach front tracts are within designated critical habitat for the Alabama beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus ammobates) and have been designated as critical habitat for the Northwest Atlantic population of loggerhead sea turtle. All of the other sea turtles known to nest in this region, including green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Kemp’s ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii), are also now federally listed.

In order to protect wildlife habitat, the Bureau of Land Management’s Southeastern States recently completed construction of dune walkovers. Here BLM manages 58 acres across six tracts of public domain lands on the Fort Morgan Peninsula, including 0.5 miles of popular beach front. These tracts were retained in the 1950’s for public access as part of a BLM program offering lots to returning WWII veterans, and are used to this day for recreation.

Foot traffic on the dunes often tramples the beach mice habitat and potentially damages burrows. The dune walk-over structures have been designed to funnel pedestrian foot traffic over the dunes to protect designated critical habitat as well as the coastal dune system.
