LS 25 | Altered Landscape SUBMISSION
Dylan Everett - Beach Replenishment

This body of work began with a series of post-Hurricane Sandy photographs made along the New Jersey coastline. The landscape of the Jersey Shore sustains a seasonal tourism industry, where local businesses depend on tourists descending upon the beaches and boardwalks every summer, and where vacation homes compete for oceanfront property. There is a fragile tension between enjoying and threatening the coastline, as the very existence of these homes and boardwalks diminished the area’s capacity to absorb storm surges, creating the conditions that enabled their destruction. In spite of this destruction, people continue to return to the Jersey Shore rebuilding their houses bigger and higher, striving to both enjoy and transform the land.
