In 2009, I saw The Beaches of Agnès at one of the small, popcorn-scented independent film theaters in Manhattan. It is a documentary I keep returning to, a source of inspiration and reflection. Her work is vast and largely understated. She doesn’t always gets the recognition she deserves as a major auteur of the French New Wave.
