The Cars That Ate Paris (Blu-ray Review) — Peter Weir’s Eccentric Debut
Peter Weir is a remarkable director rarely given the credit he deserves. He consistently proved himself to be an exceptionally versatile and talented filmmaker and may be, alongside George Miller, the single most successful Australian director of all time, leaving behind a wildly impressive collection of films including the beloved Witness (1985), Dead Poets Society(1989), The Truman…

Gaslight
I have read the play and I’ve already seen the 1944 adaptation with Ingrid Bergman. Today, I watched this British adaptation from 1940 on a BFI DVD.
I liked the performance from Diana Wynard. There’s a permeating terror and urgency in between very short moments of joy as her husband switches from giving her reasons to be happy to brutally spoiling them.
There is no question about what is happening. We watch her husband set up his gaslighting, then put it in action. If I recall correctly, the 1944 version with Ingrid Bergman did not show that, which put the audience more into Bella/Paula’s uncertain mindset, even if you still knew she was not insane. That made for better suspense. This version however is more direct in showing the mental abuse Bella is enduring from her husband.
I’m also glad to have a black and white movie to watch today. I’ve mentioned before I love black and white films.

Went to the Guillermo Del Toro fest at BFI and saw Pacific Rim in 3D IMAX which felt like seeing the film for the first time over again with just how much detail you could see. Trix had never seen it before so I was actually jealous her first viewing was this one. Pacific Rim was my 2013 hyper fixation - i saw it two days in a row at the cinema I was so in love with it and getting to see it in that screen AND have a Q&A with GDT afterwards just absolutely made my life. When he came out I started physically shaking because I was so overwhelmed. I've loved his work since I was 17 and saw Pan's Labyrinth at the Lighthouse cinema in Wolverhampton; the whole reason I love cinema is because of that film.
Afterwards we went across to Southbank for a screening of Crimson Peak and another Q&A. I had a fangirl moment when GDT called out Kate Hawley - who was sitting THREE ROWS IN FRONT OF ME. I could listen to him talk about all the tiny details of this movie forever. His mind is SO fascinating.
In lieu of being able to take home the stunning festival poster, I picked up a signed copy of the Cronos rerelease and spent the evening catching up with friends I hadn't seen in nearly a year. My heart is full 🥰
