I really appreciate Babylon 5 having the rare understanding that a laser or particle beam weapon isn’t just a fancier kind of gun.
It’s a sword of arbitrary length.

SCHWOOM
Subterranean Centaur Scare
It is 1913, and one of the most utterly bizarre events to ever happen in the claustrophobia-inducing tunnels of a mine is about to take place in Chickasaw Coalmines in Des Moines, Iowa. A horrific apparition appears to the miners at work, and commands them in a sepulchral voice to drop their tools and leave the tunnels.
This was no regular ghost, however, it was a distinctly non-human entity of the most mythological sort.
'According to the men, the upper half of the spectre was like the body of an emaciated man, while the lower half resembled the hind quarters of a horse.'
As if the entity couldn't get any more bizarre, it also appeared to be carrying an object in one of its hands from which streamed shafts of light. This reminds me of descriptions of the rod-like weapons carried by aliens, which are normally capable of paralysing humans caught in the light beams that they produce.
About the source of this bizarre tale, it's a rather sticky situation. From the article in Fortean Times in which I found this story, we can see that the original source of the yarn was a 1913 newspaper. Specifically, the March 16th 1913 edition of the Des Moines Daily News, which apparently contained an article called 'Spectre Orders 300 Miners to Walk Out'. I have searched through some online versions of this newspaper, but they are only comprised of clippings and thus I cannot find the article in question. I'm just going to take Fortean Times' word that this was actually reported.
