Wine tasting in a volcano! The vineyards are located in Chã das Caldeiras at ~ 2,000 metres or 6,500 ft elevation! That’s pretty high up for a vineyard, but in the Tropics that’s the best place for them. We arrived, and I was not expecting to find the professional and luxe operation on par with some Sonoma and Napa wineries Winemaker Kakuka Monteiro met for a winery tour and explained a little about his 5 wines. The White and Rose wines are 100% steel fermentation. The Red Wine is 50% American Oak and 50% French Oak for 6 months then blended before bottling. He learned in Italy, Portugal and Gran Canaria before returning too Fogo. Chã Blanco - WHAT A SURPRISE!! I was expecting vinegar it it was anything but! It was fresh, slight fruitiness, touch of melon, but not sweet. A nice summer sipper from Síria grapes - a hearty Portugese native varietal. Chã Rose - also dry, although not quite as refreshing as the Blanco. Which makes sense considering the grape it’s made from - the same as their red. Chã Tinto - from the native Touriga Nacional iPortuguese grape. It has big body, tannins and acid. I didn’t love this initially as a stand alone - it has a bit too much acid for me. I let it sit for about 20 minutes and tried it again, and it had softened. I think this would be great for BBQ! Bagaceira - is 45% alcohol! They take all the skins, stems and seeds and ferment them into Grappa! It's Ho, t but a nice long, soft, slightly sweet finish. The Passito is a nice late harvest with favors of honey and rope peaches - would be great with a bowl of vanilla ice cream! It was a great tasting and the wines were only $10! All in all it was a bear afternoon spent out un the vineyard in the volcano! #beardedwino in the #volcano (at Chã Das Caldeiras, Fogo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqvXBIlueeE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
