Hi! First of all, please let me say your simply a stunning artist and I love reading your comic(s). Hell you've got me interested in playing D&D. But I am curious, and if you don't mind me asking... How do you even start with a backstory for a character? I've chosen my race/class etc, but now I am stuck about how to create a backstory for a character which hasn't been done before... Any tips?
Aw thank you so much! I’m glad my work got you into playing D&D!! Hope you have a lot of fun playing.
As for backstory tips... hmm, lets see
Try and think of why your character would have their class or background. For example, my fighter Pyra became a fighter cause she wanted to protect people and doesn’t like to be a damsel. Because of this she joined the city watch to protect her town from monster attacks!
Talk with your DM about the world/setting your playing in! They might be able to give you some ideas about different places/events that happen in the campaign. Like maybe there’s a big city known for rare gemstones that a rogue character could be very interested in? Or maybe this rogue tried stealing gems from this big city before and something bad happened? Also bouncing ideas off of someone can always help!
If you got some extra cash I’d highly suggest getting Xanathars Guide to Everything! They have a bunch of roll tables to help inspire character backstories. You can roll your birthplace, your family size, why you chose your class/backstory, and a multitude of life events from tragic stuff like “You were imprisoned for a crime you didn’t commit” to weird stuff like “A powerful being granted you a wish, but you squandered it on something frivolous”. It’s great for when you can’t think of ANYTHING like me and just need something to jump start an idea. Also it’s just fun to roll random character backstories!
And that’s the best tips I can think of off the top of my head. I hope these help!
