It's going down Saturday night at Nectar's!
Featured: Bearquarium
Bearquarium is joined by iLa Mawana and Gang of Thieves tonight at Club Metronome.
Bearquarium "Though the name originated from an epic elevator shaft connecting two Burlington, VT apartments to one another, the music has very little to do with this. The connection lies in the uniqueness of name and sound. Bearquarium. Is it whiskey-soaked rock, modern day afro-beat, old school soul? All of the above and more. Listening to Bearquarium is like swimming through a colorful aquarium full of bears and dancing your pants off while doing so (nothing’s impossible). Bearquarium has often been compared to classic groups such as Tower of Power, Van Morrison and The Meters, yet their influences range from Fela Kuti to Talking Heads, Red Hot Chili Peppers to Derek Trucks, Mr. Bungle to Bonobo, Thievery Corporation to Led Zeppelin, and everything in between. Since the success of their self-titled debut album in July 2009, the band has been touring the Northeast developing a loyal following. Panigutti’s charismatic front man skills capture audiences from the first note, and the double percussion showcases glossed with slick horn lines, raging guitar, screaming organ and fat bass tones strike chords of curiosity amongst crowds of all ages. During the summer of 2010 Panigutti took a brief hiatus, which allowed the group to develop an even tighter instrumental core. Having since returned, the once-again eight piece unit has hit the scene fully charged and jam-packed with energy. In the last few months the group has written more music than ever before, with plans to record their second full length album at home in Vermont this February." ~Bearquarium
iLa Mawana "iLa Mawana is an 8-piece original reggae movement based in Boston, MA. Recently named one of the Top 100 Hottest Unsigned Acts of 2009 by Music Connection Magazine, iLa Mawana released their debut full length studio album SOLDIERS OF SOUND in May 2010. The group then completed a five-week U.S. tour in support of the new release, including debut performances in FL, TX, LA, CA, and OR. After being featured at the 1st ever High Times Cannabis Cup in the USA alongside hip hop legend Lyrics Born & Sublime's DJ RAS MG, High Times named iLa Mawana Unsigned Band of The Week in July 2010. Touring throughout the Northeast over the past three years, iLa Mawana has been committed to bringing people together and spreading positive energy to those around them.
"...Boston's next breakout reggae act." - Lost In Sound
The band independently released a self-titled 6-track EP (2009) recorded and mixed in iLa Mawana's home studio in Brighton. The album features thick rhythmic roots and well-blended vocal and horn melodies. The group has performed alongside reggae legends The Original Wailers, Burning Spear, Groundation & Toubab Krewe. With great local support from 88.9 WERS Rockers, iLa Mawana is becoming increasingly popular in the Northeast with a hook-oriented vintage roots sound thats gritty enough to separate them from the majority of modern reggae bands." ~iLa Mawana
Gang of Thieves "Founded on love and kicking ass! The Gang of Thieves formed in January of 2009 blending influences from their idols in Classic Rock, Reggae, Blues, and Funk into their own powerful sound. Gang of Thieves brings the party with them! The group is a heavy funk/rock quartet with a similar sound and energy to Blood Sugar Sex Magic era Chili Peppers. The Gang has been called one of the "Best and brightest of Vermont's next generation" of funk rock by 7days Dan Bolles." ~ Gang of Thieves
