There are bears basically everywhere in the us. I have had bears a couple streets over from my house fairly frequently and i live in a small city!

Oh my word! I'd thought that they stuck to forested areas and houses and camping sites therein (then I looked up New York State and it is pretty damn green, foolish me) but naturally they'd come searching for food where it's easy to find, like the polar bears do in Alaska. What do people do when the bears come a roaming through the streets???
