R O Y A L S
What's your opinion on these solo Beatles compilations/bootlegs made by fans; The Black Album etc what's your favourite?
Love ‘em!
At first I thought you meant the ‘mash up’ sort of songs (I was thinking of The Grey Album - the Danger Mouse one that mixes The Beatles White Album with Jay-Z’s Black Album) but I think you mean just normal bootlegs? (The ‘fan’ thing through me! Is that different to regular bootlegs?)
The Black Album bootleg - or compilation - is good, although I think George is underrepresented (what else is new?!) There’s been quite a few like that though. My favourite kind of bootlegs are studio sessions, demos and unreleased tracks. These are a few of my faves:
KINFAUNS (Secret Trax)
Kinfauns aka The Esher Demos is my all time favourite. All the songs are acoustic demos. There’s a few different versions of this. It’s the demos and Beatles rehearsal which took place at George’s Kinfauns home sometime between 20th - 29th May 1968. There were two tapes recording this session - John brought a crappy little tape recorder (and I think thats what most of the bootlegs out there comes from) but George also recorded it on his 4-track reel-to-reel which was quite good quality. A handful of tracks from these sessions were included on Beatles Anthology, which were from George’s tape. I think they could clean this up and release it officially. It’d be fab.
THE HARRI-SPECTOR SHOW (Strawberry Records)
This is an acetate of a jam/demo session between George and Phil Spector. I think it was only ‘discovered’ in about 2001, and it’s exact recording date is hard to pinpoint because All Things Must Pass, which this must have been around, was recorded May - October 1970, but the record contains versions of John’s God and Remember from Plastic Ono Band weren’t released until December 1970. More info on it here. Half of this bootleg is the Harri-Spector Show acetate and half is other stuff. I haven’t listened to this for ages because my copy is scratched to buggery and I haven’t been able to replace it.
BEWARE OF ABKCO (Strawberry Records)
Another George one and another ATMP era one. These are George’s demos of potential songs for All Things Must Pass, made for Phil Spector to listen to, and it’s brilliant. In fact, the namesake of my blog - The Cosmic Empire - is a track on this bootleg and that’s where I heard it first.
CLOCK (Really Italian)
This is John messing around, jamming on his acoustic guitar - and answering the phone - recorded in his hotel room at the St Regis Hotel, New York in September 1971. It’s got a fair few oldies rock and roll numbers on it.
ANTHOLOGY EXTRA (OMI)
This was probably my first ever Beatles bootleg, and it’s kind of like the Black Album thing, it’s a compilation of different studio bits and bobs, including an outfake I really like of I Saw Her Standing There which combines all of George’s guitar solos from the different takes of the song recorded on 11th Feb 1963.
Thank you very much for your ask! (I hope this is what you meant?!)
