“I don’t care how complicated everyone says it is,” Beatrix said. “Win should marry Merripen. Don’t you agree, Amelia?”
“It’s not our choice,” Amelia replied. “And it’s not Win’s, either, unless the big dunderhead offers her an alternative. There’s nothing Win can do if he won’t propose to her.”
“Wouldn’t it be nice if ladies could propose to gentlemen?” Beatrix mused.
“Heavens, no,” Amelia said promptly. “That would make it far too easy for the gentlemen.”
“In the animal kingdom,” Beatrix commented, “males and females enjoy equal status. A female may do anything she wishes.”
“The animal kingdom allows many behaviors that we humans cannot emulate, dear. Scratching in public, for example. Regurgitating food. Flaunting themselves to attract a mate. Not to mention … well, I needn’t go on.”
“I wish you would,” Cam said with a grin.

There was some kind of commotion going on in the suite, which shouldn’t have been a surprise considering it was his family’s suite. The air was filled with cursing, exclamations, and grunts of physical combat.
“Leo?” Beatrix appeared from the main receiving room and hurried over to them.
“Beatrix, darling!” Leo was amazed by the difference the past two and a half years had made in his youngest sister. “How you’ve grown—”
“Yes, never mind that,” she said impatiently, snatching the ferret from him. “Go in there and help Cam!”
“Help him with what?”
“He’s trying to stop Merripen from killing Dr. Harrow.”
“Already?” Leo asked blankly, and rushed into the receiving room.

“You would murder my pet?”
“One doesn’t murder lizards, Bea. One exterminates them.” Exasperated, Amelia turned to Merripen. “Find some cleaning women in the village, Merripen. God knows how many other unwanted creatures are lurking in the house. Not counting Leo.”
Merripen disappeared at once.
“Spot is the perfect pet,” Beatrix argued. “He doesn’t bite, and he’s already house-trained.”
“I draw the line at pets with scales.”
Beatrix stared at her mutinously. “The sand lizard is a native species of Hampshire—which means Spot has more right to be here than we do.”
“Nevertheless, we will not be cohabiting.” Walking away before she said something she would regret later, Amelia wondered why, when there was so much to be done, Beatrix would be so troublesome. But a smile rose to her lips as she reflected that fifteen-year-old girls didn’t choose to be troublesome. They simply were.

She was so bloody frank and practical about the whole thing that Christopher couldn’t help but be amused. “I’m afraid I can’t oblige you.”
“Why not?”
“Because when you said that just now, I found myself starting to like you.”
“You’ll recover,” she said.
