I was reading Tempt Me at Twilight and the main couple are definitely a Hufflepuff-Slytherin couple
Slytherin: I never want to be apart from you. I’m going to buy an island and take you there. A ship will come once a month with supplies. The rest of the time it’ll just be the two of us...
Hufflepuff, flatly: You’d start a produce export business and organize a local economy within a month.
Slytherin, realizing she’s right: God. Why do you tolerate me?
Tempt Me at Twilight
Of all the rereads, I was most looking forward to this one. My desire for Chasing Cassandra and Tom/Cassandra’s story started me on this journey and I definitely get a Harry Rutledge vibe from Tom Severin. Though Tom seems to have more humor, they both are calculating, self-possessed, callous and scary intelligent. Neither of them have a clue how to love someone else because they’ve never experienced any love for themselves. (At least, I’m assuming Tom never has, we will shall see...in 11 long months...) Spoilers ahead, btw.
I love a Beauty and the Beast storyline where the hero is hot but a tad monstrous on the inside. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a tortured/tormented hero and the journey from self-imposed solitude to HEA. Harry and Poppy are just too precious for words. I love the Hathaways and their unconventional loves...and I love how each book is different and how much the family plays into everyone’s story.
Poppy is exactly what Harry needs, and ironically he is what she needs too. I love how long we have to wait for them to finally come together. It makes it so worthwhile when the guards are down and the distance is gone...and I also love that just because they finally are on the same page doesn’t mean everything is perfect. Harry can still be cold, Poppy is still sensitive/naive...they’re still figuring each other and their relationship out. I think we get so much more insight into the man Harry is becoming in the next book. He’s just starting on the journey to hero with a heart in this one and I’m completely okay with that. I love that Tempt me at Twilight and Married by Morning go back to back in the Hathaway series.
Favorite quirky/random moment: When Poppy leaves Harry, she packs an automation that he made, one that sat on her dressing table. Its quite clear that deep down, Poppy is rooting for her and Harry to work this out, but she has no idea how to get them on the same page.
Things I loved:
Leo and Marks rock my world.
Beatrix being the only Hathaway to support the union.
Harry barking at everyone when Poppy gets hurt and wanting a second doctor’s opinion before he even has the first.
The fact that Harry’s busy mind won’t let him sleep, but after he gets to Hampshire and makes things right with Poppy, he finally starts being able to rest.
Harry telling Poppy she’s his balance wheel.
Favorite Moment: When Harry arrives at Ramsey House bone tired and ready to put up a fight to get Poppy to come back to him and she befuddles him by kissing him.
Favorite Lines: “This was not a problem to be solved in a conversation, or in a day, or even a year. This was a wound to the soul.”
“I’m sorry I’m not the husband you wanted. But I swear on my life, if you’ll tell me what you need, I’ll listen. I’ll do anything you ask. Just don’t leave me again.”
Scene I wish we could have seen: Harry stuck in the room. Given what we know of his past, I think that would have been great drama/angst and given the reader even more insight into why he is the way he is and allowed greater sympathy toward his character. What we know of his past comes from Catherine, but actually seeing him stuck in there, desperate to get out, worrying about Poppy, would have directly shown that vulnerability.
Love this book! Love Harry’s addition to the Hathaways and his connection to Miss Marks. Now on to the next one!
