It was not unusual for Lady Scarlet to frequent Nightshade Row. But she rarely dressed so conservatively or arrived in the afternoon. However, today was the first of the month, so she was going to visit the children in the Snow White Orphanage.
She always received a warm welcome from the children. It never failed to delight her to see so many smiling faces. The Orphanage was the nicest one in Belladonna and perhaps maybe all of Midsummer. The children were well cared for and were never in need of food, drink, or even leisure time. In truth, the orphanage likely had no need of her charity. But she would give it all the same, especially now that Kit was a mother.
“Lady Scarlet!” One of the older children, Edvin, exclaimed and came to wrap his arms around her. Kit hugged him in return, ruffling his hair, before releasing him so some of the other bolder children could approach. She smiled at the shyer ones hovering in the perimeter.
“What did you bring us today?” Edvin continued. Evidently Edvin had become some time of makeshift leader. He was now maybe 90 years old. It made sense the younger children would urge him to be their voice.
“Oh, nothing too special. Just some old things I have no use for.” Kit winked, before crouching down to open her bag and revealing a few pounds of candy and various toys. “I was thinking maybe you all could help me get rid of it.” She began to pass out the candy to the older children while she allowed the younger children to come forward and pick out their toys. Her bag was about half empty when a door swung open and she looked up.
