“But I'll keep your number saved
'Cause I hope one day you'll get the sense to call me “
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome aboard flight 3B7 en route to Seoul, Korea. Kindly fasten your seatbelt and secure all baggage underneath….” the standard announcement played out. She rested onto her seat and stared at the distant city lights as the plane took off.
Five years.
That was how long she was gone, and that period of time was more than enough for many things to change - for herself and for others.
“Ah. We’re finally going home.” Seulla spoke up while wrapping a blanket around her chest, reclining her seat in childlike amusement.
“Oh, right. Jinyoungie told me that since you’re coming back they’re thinking whether you guys should have a reunion. You know, like the old days in the band?” she relayed her boyfriend’s message.
“Seulla. You know to yourself that it will not be anything like the old days.” Riseul replied, a scowl forming on her face. Before Seulla could even reply, she closed her eyes, an action that meant that the topic was over.
A reunion was the last thing she’ll ever want between them.
In the busy city of Seoul, tens of screens were plastered on buildings, displaying a man around his 20’s shining brightly onstage. A smile so captivating it stopped anyone from their tracks. His brown hair slicked back, sweat dripping down his face. He winked and left a random passerby squealing on the sidewalk.
But she couldn’t care less as she plugged the earphones to her phone and maxed the volume as she walked away from the lined screens that broadcasted the same performance.
It was a successful comeback with him as the center, and it frustrated her how he had the ability to haunt her without even meaning to do so.
The years may have murked the memories, but the feelings remained for her, and it still leaves a bitter aftertaste on her mouth whenever she was reminded.
It was too good to be true anyways. Their relationship that is. Everything seemed like a fairytale except they didn’t live happily ever after. Instead, her 12 midnight struck before she even realized it.
Often, she would wonder if she just fabricated their whole relationship. Time was blurring it all away too, but at times like these when she hears his voice sing another song and catch a glimpse of him on the television, she is reminded that it did happen.
Bae Riseul dated Park Jihoon, her ex-bandmate and currently one of the most popular idols in the industry.
But really, she didn’t have any energy left to waste on the old times. Not now nor ever. Besides, they lived on two different worlds. He was too popular for her own good.
An idol and a doctor? It was destined for failure. They’ll never be able to meet given how grueling their jobs were.
You’re still considering it.
A small voice whispered on her head.
Her face sourly crumpled when she caught herself immersed in thoughts of him yet again. It was long over. Reminiscing wouldn’t change a thing.
It was 5 years ago.
No use in crying over spilled milk.
So she returned to her apartment, brewed herself hot tea, changed to the most comfortable set of pajamas she had, played the most soothing music on her phone, unplugged the tv (just in case she forgot that Jihoon would be in any channel), and closed her eyes.
Tomorrow, she’d spend her day-off and have her long-awaited reunion with B.A.M.
Park Jihoon wore a black beanie, a black face mask that engulfed over three-quarters of his face. He made sure to wear the largest sweater in his wardrobe to hide his built. He chose to dress up nice and plain for once to deviate from his fashion disaster self.
It’s been over 2 years since he’s last seen them, his former band. Frankly, he missed them dearly. Nostalgia always hit him, and he’d be immediately reminded of their high school days. Jinyoung playing the keyboard, Woojin playing the bass, Seongwoo with the drums, and Jaehwan with his singing.
He missed the run-down Underground, and all the events that happened within its walls.
He misses her the most.
He texted his manager upon his arrival and began scrolling through hundreds of notifications. Jihoon didn’t notice his path until he collided with someone, causing his phone to bounce off.
“Ah, I’m sorry..” He instinctively bent down and stretched his hand towards the direction of his phone, but before he managed to, a woman of significantly smaller built picked up his phone. She held it briefly to check whether there were any cracks before handing it to him with a small smile.
“No worries. Your phone’s fine, by the way,” her tone polite, and her voice warm. She craned her neck to meet his eyes.
And it was as if the heavens have heard his musings that she was right there and then.
Five years have passed.
Many things changed like how her hair was longer, or how she stood with certainty and maturity.
Yet, some things remain.
He is still captivated by her.
But before he could even call out for her name over something that she dropped, she turned around to walk towards the long queue of people lined up near the entrance of the stadium.
She was still the first to turn her back.
But this time around, he will chase after her.
After all, Park Jihoon had a lot to explain to Bae Riseul even if he didn’t know where to start.
For now, it started with a lost ticket.
The ticket was missing. Riseul realized when she took out all the contents of her bag for the 10th time. She flapped open her wallet, removed the case of her phone, felt her pockets, and asked around, but no one knew.
Worse, the tickets long sold out.
She groaned in annoyance as the place was beginning to be packed with more people, and the sky slowly dimmed.
How could she have been so stupid to drop the ticket?
"Excuse me!" someone rushed after her and grabbed her arm. She turned around and saw a towering man. He looked very shady with his face mask and black beanie. She must have forgotten to mask her glare that the man retreated immediately and raised his hands defensively.
“I think this is yours..” he held what looked like a ticket, and her eyes widened. Her hands covered her gaping mouth and she bowed several times, and jumped in glee though modestly.
“I can’t believe this. I thought I’d never find it!” she shouted amongst the horde of people walking and chattering. “Ah. Thank you so much. You saved me.”
“No worries. You dropped it when you picked up my phone after all.” He replied.
“Can I line up with you instead? The line’s pretty long already and it would be hard to get a nice view in the back..” He requested, and she laughed at his honesty.
“Sure. After all, you ran after me and I even mistook you. Apology accepted?” she asked and offered a handshake.
His eyes crinkled and Riseul assumed that it was him smiling, “Apology accepted.”
He reminded her of someone.
It felt strange to watch the band as a member of the audience. New songs and new faces. They all moved forward, and reached for greater heights. One that they never dared to imagine before.
What started as a band of the Underground was now the most famous band in Korea. And now, they were beginning to take the international stage by storm.
“Bul ane maeum (B.A.M)! Bul ane maeum! Go with a B.A.M!” everybody chanted.
The first time she came across them was when she was 19 years old, and she grew with them for 2 years as Jaehwan’s partner vocalist.
In those two years, she noticed a lot about the habits of each member that they still haven’t let go of.
Seongwoo still likes to flaunt his angular jaw by rotating his head to the side and twirl his drumsticks before proceeding to his solos.
Jinyoung still bobs his head to the beat and plays arpeggios whenever the cameraman focuses on him.
Woojin still thinks it’s cool to do a guitar jump, and Jaehwan still exaggerates his soulful look by closing his eyes and pairs it with slight head shake as he clutches to the mic whenever he sings mellow songs.
The speakers blasted their performance throughout the concert hall and the large screens projected the band for the people in the back. Everyone raved by swaying their light stick to the beat of the song.
Woojin noticed her near the front of the stage, and nodded to her, pleased with her attendance.
“Hey. Jinyoung heard from Seulla that you’re returning to Korea next week already?” Woojin greeted as she answered her phone while folding her clothes.
Riseul clips on her earphones, “Yeah. The scholarship is over, and we’ve decided to continue our residency there.”
“Then schedule a day-off on September. B.A.M’s having a concert. I got you a VIP ticket.” Woojin replies with an air of demand. She wasn’t allowed to say no.
“I don’t think I should even…” she pauses with reluctance to continue her words. “I left the band after all.”
“You didn’t leave the band. You just graduated from it because of reasons that we all accept. Now, don’t be so stubborn and just say you missed us too. We missed you, by the way. It’s not fun to have an all-guy band. Everyone stinks.” Woojin laughs and Riseul heard from the background Jaehwan’s shrill voice scolding Woojin.
“That’s Riseul right? Oh, God. Take back what you said, you ape. You stink the most! You fart during practice!”
“We miss you, Riseul. Remember, September!” Seongwoo’s cool voice was on the phone, and Riseul could imagine how he casually snatched the phone from Woojin and pushed him away with his arms.
“Oops. We’re going back to practice now. See you soon, Ri.” Woojin’s raspy voice bade goodbye without any change to his attitude from when they first became close.
“I miss you all too,” she laughed and immediately realized her defeat as Woojin and the other howled. “Oh God, you had that on speaker didn’t you?”
“Can’t say for sure~” Woojin replied teasingly before cutting off the line.
It has been over an hour since the concert started, and everyone in the band was sweating profusely with the heat from the spotlight, the singing, and the intense playing of their instruments. The first set was almost over before they slipped into a small break.
Suddenly the stage lights dimmed down, and Jaehwan cleared his throat.
“Everyone knows that at each concert, B.A.M performs a song not listed within the setlist. This one’s an old song composed by our former member. Title is ‘Letting Go’ “
Woojin strummed his bass and there was the familiar rising harmonization.
It would be a lie if she told herself that she didn’t want to perform with them again like the old days.
“Only Jihoon and I are missing,” she tugged the sleeves of the person beside her unable to catch herself before the words flowed out of her mouth.
The two jolted and stepped back for their own reasons.
Hearing herself utter his name rattled her.
Hearing his own name from her lips rattled him.
“Ah. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize what I was saying,” she retreated her hands away from him. He nodded understandingly trying to brush everything off until someone grazed her lightstick on his beanie, flicking it away and unstrapped the right part of his face mask from his ear.
The young girl immediately noticed what she had done and turned to apologize. “It’s okay.” Jihoon tried to stop her, but as the lightstick illuminated his face, with the face mask half-dangling because it got removed from his right ear, and his brown hair shining, it was only a matter of time.
Then there was recognition in her eyes.
“Aren’t you Park Jihoon?!” she exclaimed and her voice echoed down the concert hall because the song the band was performing was mellow and accompanied by silence from the crowd.
People turned around. Jihoon tried to pick up his beanie and salvage it, but even before he was able to reach it, people came forward, swooping their phones, and turning on their cameras.
He tried to find Riseul in the crowd and saw her being pushed towards the back as she stood there dazed as she stared at his face. He clicked his tongue in annoyance, and removed his face mask to mouth off something as he looked at her intently.
“The ticket! Look at the back of ticket,” he mouthed silently hoping Riseul would catch it.
“Phone number… Your ticket… at the back!,” he mouthed again, as he kept being jostled by the crowd. The noise kept attracting more people.
The commotion pushed the security to temporarily stop the concert, keeping them from finishing the song..
She stared at him, and at her hand before flipping the ticket. It was his phone number.
She looked at the ticket, then to him and back to the little piece of paper where he wrote his number. He smiled with relief finally turning to his fans and mumbled apologies.
When he noticed that she stood at the same spot, he looked at her again.
Their eyes locked, and he recognized anger from her narrowed lips and drawn down eyebrows..
She raised her palm holding the ticket before crumpling it and ripping it into small pieces never breaking contact from his eyes.
notes: the title’s a play on the pronunciation of the dreaded “D” word. Also, because people will kill me if I did use that as the title.
This will be the longest post ever for this fic. I just needed to establish until that part or else the pacing would be awkward. It’s been awhile, but I’m glad to be back.

song inspiration : Exit Wounds by The Script
“I'm falling through the doors of the emergency room
Can anybody help me with these exit wounds
I don't know how much more love, this heart can lose
And I'm dying, dying from these exit wounds”
---
"I shouldn't have chased after you that night..."
Jihoon mumbled under his breath as he violently ruffles his hair in annoyance. Those words left his mouth before he could stop his impulsiveness. And he himself wonders if he meant it.
"You're saying that you regret...all this?"
The tiny glisten of teardrops starting to pool in Riseul's eyes reminds Jihoon of the said first night. Why did it feel like they were destined to begin with tears and end with tears?
Their hearts clenched at the same time but none of them dared to break their front, pride taking over.
"Don't you?"
She didn't answer, not when Jihoon's words hurt not because of their venom, but because a small part of her couldn't help but agree.
She regrets it.
Everything. Because she couldn’t help but blame herself as to how their relationship spiralled down the drain, all the small arguments building up into one breaking point.
"After all, weren't we just deluded back then? I wanted to fix you, and you wanted to replace him."
When those words left his lips, she knew the end was near.
She bit her lips in absolute hurt. "That's how you saw me, Park Jihoon?" Her lips quivering, voice shaking and nails sinking into her palm.
"You're right. You shouldn’t have chased after me that night." She nodded her head with full understanding, hands brushing past her tears. "But in the end, I shouldn't have fallen in love with you."
"Maybe you never did. You were in love with Youngchul's memory. And it just so happens that I was there to fill that gap."
At this point, she was numb. The tears have stopped falling and the only feeling that remained was frustration. She was frustrated because of the way Jihoon thought of her. She was frustrated because she couldn't speak properly and tell him how her heart was being pierced uncontrollably.
But most of all, she was frustrated because underneath it all, she knows she still loves him. She loves Park Jihoon. Not Youngchul nor his memories. Park Jihoon, the very man in front of her; the root of her current pain.
"Now I know how you feel about this relationship. I guess there's no point in staying then." She smiles bitterly and walks back before turning completely.
Jihoon stayed motionless with his head down. In his heart and mind, he felt a certain heaviness. He tried to block out the sounds of her footsteps getting fainter because it just added to the weight.
He pointlessly stares at the ground and his worn out shoes. And with both eyes tightly shut to keep the tears from spilling, he admits to himself that he messed up.
"And just so you know...I loved..." she pauses "I love you because you're you."
Just like that she was gone. He didn't even get to look up to see her figure getting smaller and smaller as she walks away. She just disappeared. From that street and from his life.

“Keep stirring your coffee like that and you’ll burn your fingers real quick.” Seulla sneaked up on Riseul, looking over her shoulders as the latter stirred her coffee rather hastily. Surprised by the sudden presence, Riseul flinched and spilled some on the back of her hands. “Oops, told you so.”
“If you didn’t creep up on me like that, I wouldn’t have.” Riseul grunted and angrily pulled some paper towels.
“Hey, Ms. Grumpy, what is up with you?”
“Hard day at the ER.”
Hard day at the ER? If anything, that boosted your adrenaline and you wouldn’t be needing any coffee. And it’s midnight, the ER isn’t even half-full. Seulla wanted to retort, but decided against it and resorted to her handy detective work to try and figure out what was bugging her best friend, a skill she has mastered throughout the years.
“Really?” Scanning Riseul’s desk as she made her way to her own, she saw a couple pieces of paper which seemed like they were once whole. Interesting. Seulla somehow had a hunch feeling that Riseul’s current behavior rooted from something that happened last night.
“How was the concert?”
“Fine.”
She didn’t see them for the longest time and all she says is fine? Yeah right.
“Woojin’s doing well?”
“Uh-huh.”
“How’d they play?”
“With instruments, obviously.”
With narrowed eyes, Seulla turned to handy Google to see the happenings of last night. Surely, nothing too bad right?
Park Jihoon, ex-BAM band member spotted at last night’s BAM concert
Wrong.
After reading the article and trying not to wince at the details it provided, she coughed to get Riseul’s attention. She knew what was making her act so weirdly. Did she think she could hide away her feelings again? Doing that never turned out well for her or for anyone.
“Jihoon still looks the same?” That finally made her look up.
It wasn’t a question that asked for a definite answer. It was rhetorical and it was enough to hit Riseul right where she didn’t want to get hit. Her heart started beating fast at the sudden mention of his name. At that moment, she hated herself more for how involuntary her response was.
Seulla lifted her eyebrows at her friend who is evidently still trying to keep a straight face. “Riseul, it’s not working, alright? Tell me what happened.” Riseul turned back to her drink.
“He was there. I was there. Right beside each other. He gave me his number. I ripped it. Walked away. End of story.”
“Ripped it?”
Riseul nodded to the ripped pieces on top of her desk. “Right in front of him while looking directly at his face.” Silence filled the room while Seulla tried to absorb her friend’s cold summary.
At that moment, Riseul’s beeper rang, signalling a call for her at the ER. She stood up, checked the small device with fake nonchalance and headed for the door before pausing.
“He lost some weight.” With that, she walked out briskly with her head down, trying to suppress the sudden surge of emotion that comes with bringing back last night’s encounter.
Seulla shook her head. She even noticed that.
“She didn’t even need to rip it. She still has it memorized. She’s still putting on a show.” With a mumble, she walked over to Riseul’s desk and the abandoned cup of coffee on top of it, which she knew her friend never even planned to drink.

Leaning back on the couch of the dim break room, she held the taped up pieces of paper in one hand and her handphone on the other, fiddling with them with an expression of reluctance. The phone number has been typed up on her phone and has been checked for errors far more times than necessary.
Would he even be awake? Why does it matter, he’s going to see the text in the morning anyway. But the sooner he sees it, the better, right?
As if putting her unnecessary thoughts to a stop, she sat up with both knees on her legs and mumbled to herself as she so often does. “It’ll be better for everyone if I fix this once and for all.”
With a final sigh, she pressed dial and put the phone to her ears with newfound confidence.
Hello?
She noted the undertone in his voice. He was expecting, waiting for a call.

song inspiration: Don’t Want To Be An Idol by VIXX
Because I’m an idol, because I’m a celebrity
I can’t hold your hand when we walk ...
--
She switched on the television in the lounge room, continuously coursing through the channels with little interest, a blank expression on her face as the sound from the television droned out.
She felt numb from the hospital gossip and the anonymous messages; the curious glances from the staff, and the not-so-subtle interrogation just to prove that it was a far-fetched idea that she dated Park Jihoon.
On the other side of the screen, Jihoon sat along with his co-stars finding it more and more unbearable to continue with the press-con.
The atmosphere in the said press-con reeked of tension. Everyone was waiting, second guessing on dropping the question, but no one took the chance. No one dared to ask. Instead, they threw watered down questions, the usual “Can you say something about the drama?” or “How was working with actor X”
When the host deemed that the reporters had asked enough, and formally closed the discussion, Jihoon decided to finally take the leap. He was busily observing throughout the press-con, segregating the veteran reporters from the neophytes.
He knew from his experiences that the new ones always had the guts to ask the unwanted questions.
“Really? Is that all? I think Miss Kim in the back wanted to ask one more question.” He smiled innocently as he pointed to the young woman with the name tag Kim who dressed a little too fashionably for that boring press-con.
“Ahh, uhm” she stuttered, flipping fastly on her notes and shuffled through the set questions until she finally found the unasked question. Miss Kim looked around only to find everyone’s eyes on her, a nonverbal cue to pressure her into asking.
“Can you give us a statement regarding the controversy about you and your former bandmate, Miss Bae Riseul?”
Everyone held their breaths in suspense. Jihoon grabbed the mic. “Sure.”
Immediately, all the reporters who initially feigned disinterest regarding the issue held onto their pens, opened the voice recorders and started scribbling for notes. The cameraman immediately zoomed to Jihoon.
“To put it simply, during our days as members of B.A.M, Rise-- Ms. Bae and I did have a relationship with each other,” Jihoon started and everyone nodded along.
“We dated for two years before we broke up. After the break up, we quit the band although it was Ms. Bae who quit first to pursue her studies. I quit 2 months later and pursued becoming an idol. During those years, we didn’t establish any contact with each other. In the recent B.A.M concert, it was pure coincidence we ran across each other. The hospital visitations weren’t meant for her at all. Earlier this year, I was involved in a car accident. I was advised to undergo therapy for my knees.” He explained calmly and perfectly just as how he had it in his mind.
“What we are now are nothing but friends. It may be hard to believe, but we have both grown as individuals and clearly understand the extent of our relationship.”
“But, what about --” another reporter chimed in, but before he could even deliver his question,
“The only reason I took this chance to explain everything about us is because everyone has gone overboard regarding the issue. The other party became harassed over misleading news up to the point where her own safety has been compromised that may have even caused serious injury or death.” His eyes spoke of uncontained anger.
“Ms. Bae may have been my ex-girlfriend, but regardless of who she was once in my life, it’s unacceptable to threaten someone and even hurt someone. I would like to remind everyone that the law is there to punish you, and I am more than willing to assist in tracking whoever tried to harass Ms. Bae in any form. And to the reporters, I hope that you’re aware that publishing false news could call for legal actions against you. That’s all.” Jihoon rested the microphone on the table and bowed before leaving the hall to prevent the media from swarming him with questions.
He didn’t know if his statement would do more harm than good, but he wished that his boldness and honesty would at least charm a few. Everything blew to his favor though when netizens and articles suddenly painted their relationship in a positive light, and Jihoon’s actions as chivalrous and admirable. Although some remained to criticize Riseul, he was comforted that everyone was starting to turn over.
Soon, everything would be over.
---
He stood by the hallway trying to blend in with the numerous patients queuing for their check-up. He saw her from afar, standing out amidst the pool of plain white and greys in that hospital. He would have been able to find her anywhere because his eyes always followed her every step. And he couldn't help but find a small smile on his face upon seeing that the woman he loves so much conquered her fears and achieved her dreams.
She neared him while walking along some of her fellow doctors and he waved. Riseul to his direction, confusion on her face. The last time they met, she lashed out at him with how he managed to turn her life upside down again. It was puzzling how he was back so soon.
"Jihoon-ssi, are you here for your therapy?" Jihoon felt the forced civilness in her voice and a smile reserved for acquaintances. They were just a meter apart but he still managed to feel that he was just a stranger to her life now.
“I came to say goodbye since I’ve completed the sessions for the therapy,” he answered. No surprise landed on her face.
“Are you okay? Are you still receiving emails or did any one try to hurt you?”
“It’s all good now. Thank you, Jihoon-ssi” she hugged the clipboard she carried.
“You don’t need to thank me. I dragged you into that mess, and I really don’t want to let you go through that again so I won’t bother you anymore. I know that you’ll be uncomfortable if we practice for the Reunion together so I’ll just reject it. I won’t perform. So please, attend the reunion of B.A.M and sing again,” he bowed.
"Don't bow to me. It's making me uncomfortable." Riseul replied as she gazed at Jihoon's figure. He retracted and she tried to meet his eyes before breaking it off. Jihoon still had that same gaze, resolute and unfazed. She tugged the end of her sleeves, her fingers fidgeting... a habit coming from her nervousness.
"It was nice meeting you again...Riseul-ssi." and he walked past her as he headed towards the exit of the hospital. Five years he wondered how she was, but now he's relieved, so it should be okay even if the tears threatened to fall.
She was his first love and looking back to their past, he wanted her to be the last as well.
His phone vibrated as he exited the facility.
One text message received.
I’ll see you in B.A.M practice. Don’t be late.
-Bae Riseul
He raised his eyebrows before breaking into laughter. It seemed like she wasn't planning to let her hold on him wear off anytime soon.

“You’re the same as other guys
You only choose the wrong words
and send them to me.”

“Did you plan this? It just so happens that you have an injured ankle when you came back from who knows where to your ex who’s a hospital employee?”
Seulla, amused with the turn of events and the situation she was now in, teased Jihoon who was now her therapy patient.
“Why would I plan to hurt myself?”
Seulla eyes him knowingly, a silent exchange of thoughts between the two. She rolls her eyes at him and gets back to the x-ray plates she’s been studying.
“So it’s all set then? Your therapy is 11 am and Riseul comes in at 12 so you’d be finished just in time for the start of her shift. If she asks you why you’re here just point to me. And the rest is up to you.”
“What if she avoids me?”
“Of course she would. That’s a given.” Seulla answered briefly, giving no possible intervention, whatsoever. You’re on your own now, bud. He seemed to hear masked from her words.
"Why did you agree to this? Telling me where she is, letting me meet her again.. She'll be mad at you if she realizes what you've done."
"She’ll know. I mean, if all this was just a miraculous coincidence, I’d advise you to go play the lottery. Who knows, maybe with your luck, you’ll get the winning numbers? Anyway, you do you, I do me. She’ll be mad but I can handle it. I do that on a daily basis.” Seulla raises her thumbs as an assurance.
"You’re really helping your best friend’s ex..."
"Helping you? We're not that close for me to do you that much favor, Jihoon. I'm doing this for Riseul. But if you want some wise excuse from me.." her finger trailing on her mouth.. “It is every doctor’s duty to tend to the wounds of their patient. Right around here,” she pricks the knees of Jihoon causing him to wince.
Pointing then to Jihoon’s chest, “Might as well help in healing your heart in the process.”
"Did you seriously say that? Wow that was so cringy. I forgot you were a romantic."
"I forgot that you're still tasteless in your fashion. You’re at a hospital, not a gym.” Seulla points to his trainers and baseball cap.
________
After a few therapy sessions, it was safe to say that bringing Jihoon in proximity to Riseul was barely a fraction of the work. First, there was the intensity of her shifts. And then there was the unfamiliarity of the maze-like hospital hallways. Lastly, and most importantly, there was the invisible wall that was her cold shoulder.
He caught her eye once. Although it was Seulla that made her look, he detected the masked surprise in her eyes which she later on passed as an acknowledgement of her best friend’s sudden presence. He was invisible to her.
This is no time to feel pathetic. He had to whisper a few times.
His first few sessions consisted of him barely paying attention to Seulla, his mind playing out all the wrong ways he could strike up conversations with Riseul. After all, was there even a right way to do this? Does he start with a compliment? No, she would think he was beating around the bush. Does he cut to the chase and tell her he simply needs another chance? No. This could strike back fast. But no matter how much he tells himself to take their reconciliation slow, he still feels like he’s running in full speed and the destination is still far from sight.
That’s why it was to his greatest surprise that Riseul herself approached him at the hospital lobby, nothing less than an extremely reluctant expression drawn on her face.
“Jihoon-ssi.”
His back was to her but he’d know that voice anywhere. She stood in front of him beyond reasonable distance of two people talking. She looked at her wristwatch.
“I’m giving you exactly a minute. Nothing more. 60…59...”
“Seulla talked you into this didn’t she?”
“Doesn’t matter…57...56…”
“So you finally got that white coat, huh? You look good.” Jihoon smiled at her, trying and failing to soften her up.
“55...54…”
“I don’t think a minute is enough. And in the first place...I don’t really know how to express everything.”
“Jihoon… If you don’t have anything relevant to say--”
“Just hit me.”
“What?”
“Hit me. Punch me. Just...whatever. I deserve it.”
He stepped forward and braced himself for some kind of impact, his eyes shut and his arms open.
“Yeah, because a doctor punching someone inside a hospital is such a common sight.”
“I can take it.”
All he got was a sigh.
“Go home.” With both hands inside the pockets of her coat, seeming all calm and collected, she set off again. They did talk for a minute, less even.
He had his head down when she walked away five years ago, hearing only her footsteps as it got softer and softer. But this time around, he saw it all. He figured, this must’ve been how it looked; the mere shape of her exuding an aura as cold and as bitter as when she walked away the first time. It was nostalgic in the most painful way possible.
Back in the break room, an expectant Seulla sprung up from her seat, not even trying to hide the fact that she’s been waiting for the outcome of her little project.
“How’d it go?”
“Not how you wish it would have gone.”
“Come on, Ri. I hate seeing you like this.”
“You really thought bringing him near me would make a difference? Seulla, I really appreciate you and I know you only have pure intents. But I personally believe we’re beyond repair.”
“I just-- I don’t want you to get through your days running from it, you know? Closure would be the best for both of you. I’m probably not in the place to push you to do this but…”
“I’m so sorry. I really, really tried but I just couldn’t do it. Not without my heart beating out of my chest and tears threatening to spill out anytime.”
“Do you wanna talk about it?” Seulla gestures to the couch in front of her, to no avail. Riseul’s restless self just wants to run away.
“I hate that after everything I’m still not numb to this. It’s ridiculous. I don’t want to look--”
“Weak. You don’t want to look weak anymore.”
“Weak and fickle. I’m afraid that this would end up with me suddenly…wanting to bring it all back.”
The two just let the silence consume them, knowing that it can communicate so much more than words can.
