So I've been thinking about posting this little snippet of Because You Left for a while, because it's Christmassy and there's snow involved and it doesn't really spoil any plot-related things (there's some details about the aftermath of Ben's spinal surgery that those of you who are LOST fans could've already guessed, but nothing that was meant to be a twist or some kind of last-minute revelation).  It's really just a cute, fluffy little scene (with an element of sadness, of course, because LOST).  And I'm not 100% sure it'll make the final draft, or that it won't change between then and now, and I kind of want to immortalize it the way it is.

And it's three days before Christmas, and I need to get my spirits up after three very long days working 6 am to 3 pm in retail during the best/worst season for it.

So have some Klaine fluff in the snow.

(Also, if for whatever reason you want to read it and haven't read anything else from BYL, what you need to know is that Blaine was born on a mysterious dangerous Island, and adopted by its single most dangerous resident.  Then they both escaped, and ever since the Island has been trying to get them back.  Which is how Blaine got shot and is also maybe/maybe not why his dad spontaneously developed a tumor on his spine that required surgery which is why everyone's at the hospital.

(Kurt remains flawless, naturally.)

It's all very cute and funny to make jokes about Blaine Anderson, Cupcake Dictator, but then I find myself watching old season three episodes where Blaine is constantly looking around and gauging the room before he even speaks, and you know what?

You go, baby.  You assert yourself.  Don't you let people shut you up anymore.  You've earned your damn right to talk.

(But make sure Tina gets a decent-sized solo with no interruptions, because talk about earned.)

Fic: Safe

Title: Safe

Characters: Kurt Hummel, Burt Hummel, Blaine Anderson

Rating: PG-13

Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers up to Glee 5x08  "Previously Unaired Christmas."  Fic deals with some of the potential fallout from Kurt having been left half-naked and tied up while his apartment was ransacked -- police reports, anxiety/nervousness, etc.  Also mentions Burt's cancer and the loss of Kurt's mother.  (It's actually not as grimdark as it seems, but.  Kurt Hummel doesn't have an easy life.)

Summary:  Kurt shouldn't feel like Blaine is the security blanket he's been longing for.  But he does.

Author's Notes:  So.  "Previously Unaired Christmas."  I realize that the basic concept is that, because it didn't air, it didn't happen -- "Glee Actually" happened instead.  But it felt to me like there was a place to make the two connect.

And frankly, I needed to give Kurt some kind of comfort after that episode.  So I wrote this.

All he's wanted for the last week is to feel safe and now he does and he just wants to break.

It shouldn't feel like this. Kurt's father has always been the broad hands to catch him when he's falling, the strong arms that support him, the shoulder he leans on when he can't hold himself up anymore.  Even after the heart attack, he was so strong, seeing Karofsky there in the hallway and rushing at him, pushing him back against the wall and turning the monster Kurt had come to fear so much back into nothing more than a frightened teenage boy, not so different from Kurt himself.  Kurt's father has always been there to come to the rescue whenever Kurt needs him, and this shouldn't feel any different. But it does. Kurt's father has cancer.  He has cancer -- he has hospitals and tests and radiation and chemo and all that goes along with it (and they've done this before, Kurt and his dad; they know what this means) and even if he does everything right he could still just die and Kurt knows his father's scared, even if he's hiding it, and he just... It shouldn't feel like Kurt can't tell his father what happened, with the buttered rum and Sexy Santa and the sudden realization that he wasn't safe at all and then the being tied up and the robbery and the police station and giving his statement and feeling their eyes on him, judging him, and handing over the remnants of his Christmas decorations as evidence for an on-going investigation because he'd been tied up with them because he was stupid and he wanted and he trusted --   It shouldn't feel like Kurt has to keep all that hidden from his father because his father is too fragile, too breakable, to hear it. But it does. It feels like Kurt is once again forced into the position of having to be the strong one when he's at his weakest and he hates it and he's angry and he's scared and he hurts and Christmas with his father shouldn't feel like this, but this is what it feels like, so he resigns himself to it and promises himself cheesecake and a good cry on New Year's Eve. Then, suddenly, there's Blaine, all bright eyes and hopeful smiles and outstretched arms and gelled hair. And it really shouldn't feel like Blaine, of all people, is the security blanket Kurt's been longing for ever since he said "No, I don't want to," and saw the face looming over his turn suddenly cold. But it does anyway. * Kurt could've given his father his bed and gone to sleep under Rachel's pink comforter, between her lace-trimmed sheets.  He could've, and it would've been perfectly acceptable, and the only one who would've known why was Rachel, and she's not here anyway, and even if she was, she's offered Kurt her bed every night this week so he doesn't have to think about what it felt like when he -- But he can't, because he hasn't slept in Rachel's bed yet, because he's not going to let himself.   Because he's Kurt Hummel, and that's not what he does. So he puts his father to bed in Rachel's cream and pink sanctuary, smiling at his half-hearted protests, and goes back out into the living room, where Blaine is sitting stiffly on the sofa, staring at the tv even though Kurt knows he's not paying attention to the infomercial promising him a hose that will never kink or knot or tear.   It's uncomfortable, but it's not as uncomfortable as it should be.  Or at least, it's not uncomfortable enough to stop him from sinking onto the sofa next to Blaine, close enough that their shoulders brush.  It's not uncomfortable enough to stop him from reaching out for Blaine's hand as soon as the urge strikes, which is about ten seconds after he sits down, and Blaine startles but he closes his fingers around Kurt's and that should make Kurt feel better but instead it makes something thick and painful knot in his throat because he shouldn't still feel so safe with Blaine but he does anyway.  And all he's wanted for the last week is to feel safe and now he does and he just wants to break. His breath hitches once, twice in his chest. Blaine's thumb rubs over the back of his hand.  "Kurt?" he asks. "Please, I don't --"  Kurt can barely force the words out; his eyes are stinging hot with tears and his tongue is heavy and he just --  "I don't want to talk about it.  I can't --  Just.  Please?" "Look at me, please," Blaine says, softly, his hand coming up to cradle Kurt's chin, but he just rests it there, let Kurt be the one to lift his face, force his eyes to meet Blaine's.  There's a beat, and then Blaine's hand slides around to the back of Kurt's neck, fingers threading through his hair and pulling him in close. "Okay," Blaine whispers.  "Okay, Kurt.  It's okay.  It's okay now." And it shouldn't be, and it really isn't, but it's close enough for the moment, so Kurt buries his face in Blaine's sweater and clings to him with both hands and sobs. * He jolts awake to the feeling of a blanket being draped over him, panics for a second before he feels a strong hand rest heavy on his shoulder, hears that rough familiar voice shushing him, saying, "It's okay, kiddo.  It's just me." Kurt's eyelids are swollen, hot and sore from crying, and there are so many things in his life that aren't okay that he can't begin to tally them all.  But he's curled up in Blaine's arms, Blaine's chest rising and falling underneath him, and their legs are tangled together; and his father is crouching by the couch, his hand still heavy and warm on Kurt's shoulder, so Kurt lets it go. He's safe now.

Author’s Notes:  I couldn't help but notice that Glee seemed to be really explicitly paralleling Jake and Blaine's storylines in "Puppet Master," and I wanted to play with that a little bit. 

As you might have noticed from the list of characters, this is a call-back of sorts to We Can Be Heroes, although you don't need to read that for this story to make sense.

"Look, I'm just saying."   The problem with Jake Puckerman is his eyes.  Everything else about him screams DANGER ALERT BAD BOY IN THE AREA, but then he's got those round brown eyes that just look so innocent and sweet.  Also, those Will Smith ears that stick out from the side of his head like adorable little jug handles.  And the disconcerting tendency towards pastels.  And his lips look really soft.  And... (They've talked about this; he and Kurt.  And they've agreed that they both still have eyes, and that it's fine to...  appreciate people, on a visual level, as long as that's as far as it goes.  Well, a visual and an auditory level, because they both also have ears and there's something about when Justin Timberlake goes for the falsetto and Jake's no JT but he can sing and...  But anyway.  It's perfectly fine for Blaine to appreciate people, as long as that's as far as it goes.  He doesn't have to feel guilty for this.) "Yes, I cheated on Marley, and that wasn't cool."  Jake runs his hand over his tightly-cropped hair, sighs and sags back into the lockers; this is bad, that he looks like this -- not angry, not defensive, but defeated.  "I know I screwed up.  I cheated, I hurt her, I know all that.  But you cheated too.  You cheated on Kurt, and he forgave you, and then he took you back, and now you're getting married.  And I just -- I want to know how you did it.  How you fixed it." "It's not --"  Blaine looks at Jake's pleading eyes, wonders how he can possibly try to explain this without Jake getting mad and storming off and probably quitting the glee club because that's usually what happens when people break up with each other.  He wishes, not for the first time, that Finn were there.  Finn was always good at love triangles, probably because he had so many.  "It wasn't...  Not that I didn't come up with a lot of plans to win Kurt back, because I did, but mostly I think it was just... time.  I needed time to get better.  And he needed time to forgive me.  And once we did that... " 

"Yeah, but you got better," Jake says.  "I can't --  I was better.  With her, I was better.  And now she's gone, and I'm...  I can't keep going on like this.  I'm getting in trouble, I'm hurting people, and I just -- I just want --"

"To stop feeling like a bad person," Blaine finishes, and tries to ignore the twist in his gut at how familiar all of this is.  He's forgiven himself, mostly, but it's not easy to think about everything that happened -- Eli, and that night, and then telling Kurt, and losing him, and almost, almost losing everything --  It's not easy to think about it.  He's pretty sure it never will be, which is probably no more than he deserves, and -- But it's not about deserves.  It's about forgive. And it hits him, then.  How he got better, and why, and who helped him.  And it won't be the same for Jake, because Finn's gone and everyone else is leaving, pretty much, but maybe.  Maybe he can make something that would work for Jake, the way Sam made something that worked for him. "Look," he says, and sinks back into the lockers next to Jake.  "I can't get you and Marley back together.  If it's meant to happen, if you really love each other, it'll happen.  I know that's probably not what you want to hear -- I didn't want to hear it either, when Mr. Hummel told me, but it's the truth.  I can't change that.  But that doesn't mean you have to be the villain.  You can still be a hero.  If that's... If that's what you want to be." Jake looks at him for a long time with his round, dark, weirdly innocent eyes.  "This is going to involve tights," he says, finally.  "Isn't it?"

"Is that a no?" Blaine asks.

Jake just sighs and sags back into the lockers.  "I can't believe I'm doing this," he says, and then closes his eyes.  "It's a yes.  If you...  If you think I can be a hero.  Then bring on the tights." * Lots of superheroes wear black leather.  Ghost Rider.  The Punisher, sometimes.  Wolverine wears one in the movies, and he's pretty sure that Cable and Storm wore black leather jackets although maybe they were vests. Maybe Jubilee?  Also the guy from Person of Interest wears one when he's not wearing a suit, and he's basically a superhero.   So that's what Jake's wearing as his superhero uniform -- black leather jacket, jeans, purple t-shirt (which was totally his decision).  Blaine's dressed down, too, mostly in black with a blue bowtie and a blue belt.  Sam's got his suit on because it sort of looks like normal clothes; and Artie's wearing his, too, just without the bald cap. Tina's in her goth outfit again.  She says it's because it's sort of a disguise; Blaine wonders if maybe she's just missing Finn more than usual today. He knows he is.  If Finn was still there; if Finn would be there next year instead of just Mr Schue...  It'd be different, then.  But Finn's gone, and it's not different, and all they can do is keep trying to carry on without him. "I know I screwed up," Jake says, and he sounds surprisingly calm given the way Ryder's glaring at him. Maybe it's helping that the Secret Society of Superheroes is standing with him?  Blaine's not sure, but he wants to be.  He hopes so.  "Not just with Marley, but...  I've screwed up a lot.  And I know that.  And I'm going to try to make things better, not just with you guys, but...  But with everyone.  But I could really, really use some backup on this.  If you'd help me." There's a long pause, and then Kitty steps forward.  "I'm in," she says.  "You need someone to keep you honest, and I could probably use the image makeover.  Besides, it's a good excuse for bringing a whip to school, which I am always down for.  Not that I would use it on anyone but my man, of course, but.  It's a good accessory." "We don't actually use whips in the bedroom," Artie says, quick and quiet.  "Just.  You know.  Throwing that out there." Kitty just raises an eyebrow at him and smiles. "Well I'm in too," Unique says.  "I'm better at this whole secret identity business than the rest of you put together.  Not to mention, I know exactly what kind of dirt goes down at this school, and I don't want anyone going through what I've had to deal with, not if I can do anything about it." "Me too," Marley says.  "It's...  Blaine's right.  This school needs heroes."  And then she looks right at Jake and adds, "And whatever happened between us, I...  If you're willing to try and change things here, then I'm willing to help you.  As a friend.  Just as a friend.  Nothing more than friends." "Nothing more than friends," Jake agrees, and manages to muster a smile, and Blaine wants to take his hand and squeeze it, but he figures it may not be the best idea, so he doesn't.  And he knows he can't tell Jake that this is how it started with him and Kurt; that Kurt agreed to be his friend again long before they got back together.  It's the truth, but what's true for him might not what's true for Jake, so he doesn't say anything. Instead, he looks at Ryder, looming behind Marley and Kitty.   Jake looks at Ryder. Everyone looks at Ryder. (Sam maybe glares at Ryder, but then Sam's really firm on what best friends are and aren't supposed to do, and fighting over girls -- "or guys, or whatever" -- is definitely on the "not supposed to" list.) "No tights?" Ryder asks, finally. Jake shrugs.  "Pretty sure Principal Sue would kick us out of school if we all showed up in costume," he says.  "So we are the Super Secret Society of Superheroes.  Street clothes only, totally undercover.  But we do have these."  He digs into the pocket of his jacket and comes out with what should be the little pile of treble clef pins that Blaine picked up at the music store the other day.   Except they're not.   They're little birds. Sam rests a hand on Blaine's shoulder.  "I figured Finn wouldn't want to take credit for something that wasn't his idea," he says, and when Blaine looks up at him, eyes starting to tear up, he wraps his arm around Blaine and pulls him in tight.  "So we have Nightbirds.  I mean, I think technically they're Mockingjays, from like The Hunger Games, but they're the closest we could find on short notice.  Anyway, there's one for each of you, if you want them.  Just know that it's a big responsibility.  You need to be ready for it." Ryder looks back at Jake, at the pins in his outstretched hand.  "Are you ready?" he asks, one eyebrow raised. Jake tugs at his jacket, revealing the pin already shining below the collar.  "Are you?" he asks. Ryder just looks at him for a little longer.  Then he reaches out and takes a pin from Jake's hand. Everyone else follows suit, and with every pin that disappears from Jake's hand, he stands a little straighter. Blaine swallows hard around the lump in his throat. * Kurt's dressed Bruce in Blaine's lobster sweater; he's holding the stuffed hand, petting it lightly.   Sometimes, Blaine wonders if he should have sent Kurt a Blaine puppet instead of a Kurt puppet, but then he's not sure that talking has ever really been Kurt's issue.   "I'm really proud of you," Kurt says, and Blaine sniffles and hugs the pillow on his lap (the one wrapped in Kurt's purple v-neck pullover) a little bit tighter.  "Not just for today, but...  Finn told me what you did, back when you started the superhero club and I --  Even when I was mad at you, I was still proud of you for that. McKinley needs heroes.  And thanks to you, it has them." "Thank you."  Blaine rests his chin on top of his pillow, crosses his legs around it.  It still smells a little like Kurt, if he breathes deep and closes his eyes and pretends.  He shouldn't really need to; he should feel good.  He's done the right thing; he's helped Jake.  Kurt's proud of him.  He shouldn't feel so -- "Was it weird for you?  Leaving us behind, knowing we'd be...  Making decisions without you, working on the costuming without you, doing Gaga without you --  I mean, didn't you ever think you were going to come back and find out we'd burned down the choir room and wrecked the theater and -- " "Sometimes," Kurt confesses.  "It's not easy, letting go.  And I honestly spent most of my time being scared of what would happen to me in New York, but I was also scared of what would happen to you in Lima.  You specifically, of course, but also Tina and Unique, and...  and my Dad, and Finn --"   Finn again, and Blaine wonders if maybe that's why this all feels so hollow.  Because Finn should be here.  He should be faculty advisor for the superhero club; he should be helping Ryder and Jake work out their issues, he should -- He should be here. "And I won't say it wasn't bumpy, and I won't say there weren't times when I wished I'd stayed a little longer, but --"  He breaks off, looking at Blaine hard through the computer screen.  "Okay," he says.  "What is it  What's wrong?" Blaine shakes his head.  "I just..."  He curls tighter around his pillow-Kurt, wishes he'd had his puppet to practice this conversation with.  He knows Kurt won't let him get away with not saying anything, but.  It's hard to bring up without having worked through all Kurt's possible reactions.  "I guess this whole thing just...  I just missed Finn a lot, this week.  I wish he was here." Kurt squeezes Bruce/Blaine's stuffed hand hard.  "Oh, Blaine," Kurt says, and there's just the smallest waver in his voice.  "You're allowed to miss him.  I miss him too.  And I --  I won't say this is what he would've wanted, because he would've wanted to be here, helping, and he's not.  But I think --  I know he'd be really proud of you, doing this for Jake.  And I think it'll be good for him.  And he'll be good for other people.  So it's --  They'll be okay, Blaine.  And if they're not, we'll --  We'll make some new costumes, and come back, and help them.  Okay?" Blaine lets out a wet, snuffling laugh, and tries to pretend it doesn't it embarrass him; Kurt just smiles at him, softly, and wraps his arm around Bruce/Blaine.  "Okay," Blaine says.   "And you'll be okay," Kurt says.  "You'll come to New York and live with me, and maybe you'll go to NYADA or Columbia or NYU, or maybe you'll just take all your puppets and costumes and start your own children's tv dynasty, or maybe you'll just work at the diner for a while until you figure things out, but no matter what, you'll be here.  With me.  And you'll be okay.  Okay?" "Okay," Blaine whispers, and wipes his eyes, and hugs pillow Kurt as tightly as he wishes he could hug the real Kurt right now.  "I love you, Kurt." "I love you, too," Kurt says.  "We'll be okay.  I promise you.  We'll be okay." * Jake wears his leather jacket and his Nightbird pin every day after that. And every time Blaine sees him, even if it's just in passing, he touches his treble clef pin and smiles, and Jake smiles back.

Summary:  In the end, they decide on yellow.

Author's Notes:  It's not that I love bossy Kurt micromanaging Blaine's wardrobe, don't get me wrong.  But I just don't think he'd forget what happened in "A Katy or a Gaga" that fast.  So this is me having him remember.

Kurt is hemming and hawing over the accessory options when Blaine brings up bowties with a bit of wistful resignation, like he knows he won't be allowed one but can't help but try.

In the end, they decide on yellow. What happens is actually this: 

Kurt is hemming and hawing over the accessory options when Blaine brings up bowties with a bit of wistful resignation, like he knows he won't be allowed one but can't help but try.  And then Kurt realizes that he's doing exactly what he did with Elliott Starchild and projecting his own fears and insecurities onto Blaine which is ridiculous because Blaine is his own person and a perfectly wonderful and wonderfully imperfect person at that, and if Carmen Tibideaux doesn't want him at NYADA then she and her school can go to hell, except when he tries to say that out loud it doesn't come out quite right and Blaine gets a little anxious and then Kurt goes even further in the other direction to overcompensate and they actually briefly have Blaine dressed up in the red polo and lobster cardigan and a bow tie with a bow tie print before Blaine, who knows Kurt every bit as well as Kurt knows him, finally figures out what's going on and suggests that maybe they lose the lobster cardigan and trade the red polo for the white polo with the yellow collar and then pair that with yellow pants and the yellow bowtie that he wore the day they got back together, saying very softly and sweetly that he feels that yellow's been good to him lately, and Kurt cuddles him for five minutes and then kisses him for five minutes and then cuddles him for five minutes more before finally pointing out that the matching sunglasses might be a little much. 

And Blaine laughs and promises to leave them with Kurt when he goes onstage. And then he asks, more hesitantly, if Kurt's sure he'll be able to make it, if he won't have to work or intern at Vogue or take a class or help Rachel rehearse or anything, and Kurt reassures him that there is absolutely no place else on earth that he would rather be than watching Blaine audition for NYADA. Which is the truth, anyway.   Because he already knows that sending Blaine up in front of Carmen Tibideaux and the judging eyes of a few dozen NYADA students is going to be absolutely terrifying and he'll probably wind up gnawing his cuticles past hope of rescue in the thirty seconds between Blaine taking the stage and Blaine starting to sing and he may or may not have several minor freakouts every time anyone looks at Blaine with anything other than love and adoration...  But it would be worse to not be there, to not be in the audience mouthing along with every word to "I Believe in You," to not be the mirror's reflection singing back at Blaine about his cool, clear eyes and impetuous grin.  He wants to be there to see Blaine dazzle everyone in that crowd (especially Rachel's former sycophants and oh God how ready is he to see Blaine just absolutely crush them with how good he is); he needs to be there in case the worst happens -- if Blaine pulls a Rachel and chokes, or if Adam goes off the deep end and tries to strangle Blaine with a scarf or something.  Blaine needs someone to catch him if he falls; he needs someone to applaud him when he soars, and Kurt knows which he'd rather do, but he's prepared for both, if necessary. So he wraps his arms around Blaine and holds him tight and says, "Besides, we're in this together, remember?  You were there for my audition, candles and all.  Of course I'll be there for yours. Of course I will.  And you will be amazing. Plus, you are pretty irresistible in yellow.  I should know."

And Blaine takes Kurt's hand in his, and kisses his finger just above the ring, and then Kurt pulls Blaine in close and lets Blaine bury his face in the crook of Kurt's neck.

And that's how they decide on yellow.

(And if it's not "classic" enough for Carmen Tibideaux, she and her school can go to hell.)
