No matter how Barney might want to romanticize it and try to make it Beauty and the Beast, Lecter's object - as you know from personal experience - is always degradation and suffering. He comes in the guise of a mentor - as he did to you - and her - but it's distress that excites him. To draw him - if that's the goal - she needs to be distressed. If you want to make her attractive to him, let him see her distressed. Let the damage he sees suggest the damage he could do. When the fox hears a rabbit scream, he comes running ... but not to help.
although the version of hannibal i write differentiates greatly from the movie and book version i think this quote is very important to understand dr. lecter’s modus operandi when it comes to his patients . he does work like any other psychiatrist and he has had several patients he has helped , sometimes through less common means , but without infringing any laws or stepping over boundaries . but if there is any evidence of great chaotic potential within a person , you can bet hannibal will do his best to wind his patient up just so he can watch them go . the worst crime anyone can commit according to dr . lecter is to be boring . but being entertaining doesn’t really mean you’ll be spared . if anything you’ll be treated like a toy . ━━━━ all of this is to let you know that if you happen to ever seek the good doctor’s professional aid , expect some manipulative tendencies and a lot of unethical encouragement . BEHAVIOR INDUCED BY DISTRESS AND MISERY IS PROFOUNDLY MORE ENTERTAINING to hannibal than that which is influenced by more positive emotions . if you come to him exhibiting these emotions , his guidance will most likely try to make you pass this misery onto others .
