In their defense, Spy wasn’t even supposed to be on the base. The majority of the team had gone out on a weekend roadtrip (which was a very American sentence), and Spy had left to go see if he could do some errands. His dry cleaning, for example. And he’d been halfway to the nearest town before he realized it was a Sunday and they would be closed, and had to turn around.

And he passed by the common room on his way back to his smoking room, already in a bad mood, and gave it a peripheral glance the way he tended to do with most places, and ended up needing to backtrack a few feet as he belatedly processed what he saw.

Two members of the team, facing away from him, watching the TV. Scout and Sniper, namely. With Scout slouched against Sniper, head on his shoulder and clearly asleep from the light snoring, and Sniper’s arm laid over his shoulders in a clearly intimate fashion, head tilted to lie atop his.

His eyebrows shot up, then furrowed together again a moment later. Three seconds of considering what to do before he clicked his lighter a bit harder than he needed to as he lit a cigarette. Predictably, Sniper jumped and went on high alert at the noise, looking behind him with a vague kind of alarm that sharpened when he saw Spy standing there.

He went from startled to panicked, and his eyes flickered quickly between Scout and Spy, clearly torn between shoving Scout off and starting to pretend nothing was happening and not wanting to wake Scout up. Spy raised an eyebrow at him. He started to sputter, voice hushed.

“Done, er—done with, with errands? Already?” he asked, an absolutely atrocious liar.

“Yes,” Spy said. “Obviously.”

“Right, right, er—I’m, er, we were—watching this, this crime sort of movie, one of those, er—what do they call them, buddy cop films?” Sniper stammered.

“I’m familiar,” Spy said dryly.

“Yeah, ‘course, um—“ Sniper went quiet for a second as Scout shifted entirely unhelpfully against his shoulder. “—rather... rather good. Good movie.”

“Hmm. Surprising that you managed to watch enough of it to make a judgement, between—“ He waved his cigarette for a moment loosely, searching for the words. “—canoodling, apparently.”

Sniper’s face was going red.

“Not that it’s any of my business,” Spy said airily, casting a look down the hall the way he’d come from. “It’s just that by loitering in the common area, you’ve made it everyone’s business.”

“They—“ Sniper started to protest, jaw tight, and sighed heavily, took a second to try to compose himself. “They already know.”

Spy’s eyebrow arched. “Meaning I’m the last to know?”

“...Nearly. Essentially,” Sniper admitted. He paused. “...Expected a worse reaction than this.”

“And why is that?”

“Because he’s your...?” Sniper trailed carefully.

Spy’s other eyebrow joined the first. “Not for the past twenty years, which I am fairly certain means I am not allowed an opinion on this,” he said dryly. “As long as you aren’t conducting some grand scheme to kill him, what do I care?”

Sniper seemed to relax slightly. “Oh... that’s, er. That’s fair enough.” He paused. “So you aren’t—?”

He was cut off by Scout shifting again, groaning slightly, sleepy. “Snipes?” Scout asked, vaguely accusatory.

“Yeah?” Sniper asked, still slightly nervous.

“Fuckin’... shut up. I’m tryin’ to sleep,” Scout murmured, looking up at him.

“Sorry,” Sniper apologized quietly.

Scout made a vague complaining sort of noise, leaning up to kiss Sniper soundly just beneath his jaw before he sank back against his shoulder again, snoring within moments.

Spy pointedly glanced away, eyebrows raised, and gave a parting wave as he continued down the hall, trying not to snicker at the sound of Sniper hissing at him to bugger off and quit being snide.
