Kellie Oneshot
Another oneshot, set soon after my previous fic
Kellie sat in her room and finally let out a couple sobs. Tamika and her had gotten into another argument, and between that and avoiding Mrs. Washington's attempts to talk, she felt utterly exhausted. Suddenly the door opened and Marvin peeked in. "Are you okay, Kellie?"
Kelly quickly wiped her eyes. "Yeah, I'm fine. What do you want?" she said hurriedly.
"You sure? Because I thought i heard you.."
"How was your band practice?" Kelly interjected suddenly. Marvin's face lit up. "It was awesome! Trent and Wooton were there. Wooton's our mailman...you should meet him sometimes! He always cracks me up! Like one time he was trying to deliver newspapers and got chased by Mrs. Randolph's dog for three blocks!" Kellie laughed at the story, and Marvin smiled seeing her brighten up and lose a bit of the aloofness she so often wore. "..anyway, he's a lot of fun!"
"Sounds like it!" Kellie agreed. "Could you introduce me to him?"
"Sure! Well, I'd better get to bed. See ya!"
"Night, Marvin." Marvin rushed to his room and quickly got ready for bead. In two minutes, he was sound asleep
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Kellie, wake up!" Kellie opened her eyes. Her door was slightly open and a dark figure stood peeking in. For a moment, Kellie thought it was her mother, and panic rose inside her. Then it came back to her; she was at the Washington's, not her house. "Kellie!" the voice spoke again. "It's me, Marvin! Grab your coat and come outside! You have got to see this!" Kelly hurriedly threw on a sweater that read Richland Champions and paused to glance at her clock. The time was 6:30. "Come one!"
Kellie followed Marvin outside, who then raced past a couple houses and stopped at a modest two-story house. On the roof stood a tall man with short brown hair who was scrambling around the roof. "That's Wooton!" "What's he doing?" Kellie whspered. "I'm not sure. Wooton, what are you doing?" Marvin yelled in a low voice.
"Hey Marvin! I'm trying to find Mrs. Randolph's newspaper..I threw it a abit too far." Kellie looked around and saw a newspaper lying near her side of the house on the grass. "Is this it?" she asked, picking up the paper. Wooton glanced at it and gave her aa sheeepish grin. "I guess I should've looked over there! Oh well...walking around on rooftops is fun! You should try it sometime!" Wooton climbed down the fire escape and jumped to the ground. "Hey, you must be Kellie! I'm Wooton!"
"Hi!" "Kellie is a great name! I wish my parents had named me Kellie!" She giggled. "Thanks! It's my ...mom's middle name."
Noticing her hesitation, Wooton asked, "Say, have you ever read PowerBoy magazine?" "No."
"I can bring some from my house!" Marvin offered, and then raced off. "I bet you'll love Power Boy. He's always ready to fight Dr. Ichabodia and rescue the town!" Kellie grinned, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "So, do you like it here in Odyssey?" Wooton asked gently.
"The people here are friendly...well most of them." "Where are you from?"
"Richland." "Ooh wow! That's a ways away!" Wooton exclaimed. "But not as far away as Alaska!" "You lived in Alaska?" Kelly asked, her eyes wide. "Yep! Ioved having snow all the time! The only thing that was a a bummer was that my brother would tease me endlessly. One time he even told me I was a random kid and not my actual brother, even though we were twins. And my dad was odd. He would give my brother these really cool model traains for Christmas but wouldn't give me anything. I had my butler, but didn't get a much time or love from my parents. "
Kellie was quiet. "Yeah, Christmases with my mom were...rough at my house." she said with a slight shudder.
Wooton's eyes softened and he gave her a kind shrug. "Yeah, it sounds like we both had messed up parents. When I was older, I vowed to be a kinder person than they were to me. It still sucks though."
A tiny pinprick of light shone in Kellie's eyes. "Thanks Wooton. You actually understand." Just then, Marvin ran in, out of breath. his arms full of comics. "Sorry I took so long! Here's a bunch of comics!" Kelly took a few and the two of them turned to leave. "See ya Wooton!" They waved at the mailman "Bye! and thanks for the newspaper!"
2. Overall view, looking west-southwest- Thomas Murphy Homestead, north of John Moulton Homestead, approximately 1,000 feet west of Mormon Row Road, Kelly, Teton County, WY, found on the Library of Congress Online Photo and Print Catologue.
I'm not sure when this photo was taking, but I have found a NPS document planning on fortifying the derrick dated from some point after 1990. However, recent photos of the homestead show it is no longer standing, though satellite view suggests its remains are still in the spot.
The Chosen One - Part 3
I found a script I'd written over 15 years ago as a follow-up to "The Chosen One." Since the original episodes dealt with so many darker themes, this is the episode I wished they would have written in a similarly serious tone, rather than the lighthearted episodes we got afterwards. Trigger warning: physical and verbal abuse.
Setting - The Washington's house at night. Kellie's room.
(Kellie is dreaming)
Laura: Kellie! Did you break this glass? Kellie: I'm sorry, Mom. I was trying to get you some water Laura: Clumsy girl! How many times have I picked up after your messes! Why are you so stupid? You worthless child! (she begins to hit Kellie) Kellie: Ow! Mom, stop! Stop! (the blows become harder) Mom, stop!
(Kellie wakes up)
Kellie: Stop! (the door opens, and Elaine Washington walks in) Elaine: Kellie, are you okay? I heard you screaming. Kellie: (sullenly) I'm fine. I just had some vivid dreams. Elaine: (gently) Was it about your mother? (Kellie stays silent) Elaine: Kellie? Kellie: (shakily) I dreamed I was getting her a glass of water, and accidentally broke it. And she just started hitting me and calling me all sorts of names. (she breaks down and sobs) Just like what always happened at home. I never knew whether she'd come home in good mood or in a bad one. The good moods were alright. But when she'd been drinking...it was awful, Mrs. Washington Elaine: Kellie, your mother won't hurt you anymore. Kellie: (still crying) She always told me I was useless. She called me a loser whenever I tried to help her. I know there's something with her. Maybe there must be something wrong with me. Some...darkness in me she needed to get at. Elaine: (holding back tears) Kellie, you a wonderful, precious child. There's nothing wrong with you. Kellie: (regaining her composure) Right…I'm going back to bed. Elaine: Try to get some rest. I'm just in the next room if you ned me.
(Ed and Elaine's bedroom)
(Ed is waiting for Elaine) Ed: What was wrong? Elaine: (sighs) She had nightmares of her mother, the poor thing. Ed, her mother beat her for every little mistake. She even feels like a nobody. (sighs). I hope I was able to comfort her a little, but this is new territory. (Ed hugs Elaine) Ed: (with tears in his eyes) We'll show her love--God's unconditional love. In time, God will heal her heart. Elaine: Let's pray for her right now. Ed: Good idea (praying) Father, we lift up to you your child--Kellie.
(Music bridges to next scene)
(Setting - the next day. At the Washington's house at breakfast)
Ed: Kellie, would you like some milk your cereal? Kellie: (sullenly) No. Tamika: (under her breath) Boy, someone sure got up on the wrong side of the bed today. Kellie: (hearing the comment) Tamika, I'm sure I'm not as crabby as you sometimes. Tamika: Well at least I'm not rude to everyone like you! Kellie: You're the snobby one! Tamika: Oh yeah? Welló Elaine: Girls, girls. Let's just get through breakfast without any more fighting. Tamika: She started it. Ed: Tamika, enough. (silence prevails. Tension is in the air) Elaine: So, Tamika, what's happening with you and Gwen? Tamika: We're meeting at Whit's End to talk and have some ice cream. Kellie: Can I come? Tamika: (annoyed) Kellie, I see you all the time at home. Can't I at least have some time for myself? Kellie: (put off) Well, fine. I don't want to see you are your stupid friend anyway. Tamika: She's not stupid! Kellie: (lightly) Just like you. Tamika: You take that back! (they both start arguing fiercely) Ed: Oh, boy.
(Setting - Whit's End)
(Kellie walks in)
Whit: Hello, Kellie. Kellie: Hi (Connie comes over) Connie: Whit, have you seen Eugene anywh--. Oh, hi Kellie (coldly) Kellie: Hi. Did you ever get your book back? Connie: Of course not, since you destroyed it! Whit: (warningly) Connie.. Connie: How could you destroy my book, Kellie? Huh? Whit: Connie, stop! Kellie: It's okay, Mr. Whittaker. I'd better go. (Kellie leaves) Whit: Connie! Connie: I was just giving her what she deserves, Whit. Whit: Connie, after all Kellie's been through, don't you think she needs love and forgiveness? Her mother has given her none of that. She's a hurting girl, and showing bitterness and resentfulness won't help. Connie: But she destroyed my book! Whit: There's still no real evidence she did. You don't have any proof in your accusations. We need to love Kellie, not point fingers at her. Connie: (after a long pausee) Yeah,,.you're right, Whit. (sighs). I'm still angry at her. But I should bring bring that up to God instead of with her.
(Setting - the Washington's house. Tamika and her mother are in the kitchen drying dishes)
Tamika: Where does this plate go, Mom? Elaine: In the cabinet beside the fridge. (Tamika puts the plate away.) Elaine: Tamika. Tamika: What? Elaine: Honey, you need to be more kind to Kellie. Tamika: I know, but she is so annoying sometimes! She calls me names and insults my friends all the time! Don't you see that? Elaine: Yes, but excluding her from things won't help. Tamika: I just wanted some time with Gwen alone. Without her. Elaine: I understand, but telling Kellie you don't want her around isn't helping things. She's been through so much rejection she doesn't need it here. Tamika: We don't need her here! I'm sorry Mom, but I knew this would happen if Kellie came. Yes there was some sweetness in here, but she's been nothing but trouble ever since she got here! I just can't take it! Elaine: Try to be more understanding. Tamika: She's just not someone you can understand.
(Setting - at the park. Kellie sits in front of a payphone on the park bench. She feels a bit lonely)
Kellie: (to herself) Maybe I would've been better off with you, Mom. Then at least I wouldn't have a sober person not wanting me around. (Marvin walks up) Marvin: Hey, Kellie. Kellie: Oh, hi, Marvin. (they sit in silence for a little while) Marvin: Y'know, I've had a lot of fun with my band. I play drums, and my friend Trent plays the cello. We've performed a couple times around Odyssey. Kellie: Really? Marvin: Yeah. It's been fun. We're called, "The Cool Dogs." Kellie: (laughing) Where'd you come up with that name? Marvin: Well, I really liked the name "Los perros frescos," which means "the cool dogs." Kellie: Neat. Do…do you need a keyboard player? Marvin: (hesitantly) Well…actually, we already have a keyboard player--Tamika. Kellie: Oh. (they sit in awkward silence) Marvin: Kellie, why do you and Tamika fight so much? You fight with her more than I do, and believe me, we fight a lot. Kellie: I guess I got it from my mother. (Tamika shows up) Tamika: Marvin! There you are. Dad's been looking for you. He needs your help with something. Marvin: Okay. See you later, Kellie. Kellie: Bye. (Marvin departs, leaving Tamika and Kellie. Tension fills the air) Tamika: Kellie, about my get together with Gwen… Kellie: (all of a sudden) So, you're the keyboardist for Marvin's band. Tamika: (stammers) Uh…yeah. Kellie: (sarcastically) I'm sure you'll be good it…as good as anyone like you can be at things. Tamika: What's that supposed to mean? Kellie: Only that I'm sure you'll be an awful addition to Marvin's band. (she leaves) Tamika: (fuming) That girl!
(Setting - the Washington's backyard. Ed is mowing the lawn, Marvin helping)
Marvin: Dad, can I ask you something? Ed: Sure, go ahead. Marvin: I was talking to Kellie, and she said she fights with Tamika because of her mother. Ed: Sadly, that is true. See, everything Kellie did to try to help her mother was regarded as useless. Even worse, her mother started insulting her, calling her a loser. So she got used to the name-calling and hurtful words. Now she fires them off herself." Marvin: Whoa. So that's why she and Tamika fight. That's terrible. Dad, could we pray for her? Ed: Of course we can.
(Setting - Whit's End. Tamika enters)
Whit: Hi Tamika! Tamika: (wearily and frustrated) Hi Mr. Whittaker. Whit: Uh oh. Is something wrong? Tamika: Yeah. Whit: Let me guess. It has something to do with Kellie? Tamika. Uh huh. She drives me crazy some times. She's always insulting me and calling me names. It's driving me nuts! But Mom and Dad don't seem to care. Whit: Tamika, you do know what kind of life she's had, right? Tamika: I know a little. Whit: Although I've never seen Kellie insult anyone, this doesn't suprise me. Tamika: Why? Whit: Because I know about Kellie's upbringing and the kind of abuse she's had to deal with. Tamika: Like what? Whit: Well-- (Marvin enters) Marvin: Tamika! I wanted to talk to you. Tamika: Okay. Marvin: You know how you and Kellie always fight? Tamika: Yeah? Marvin: Well, I think I know now why Kellie acts the way she does. Tamika: Why? Marvin: Her mother insulted her a lot, calling her names, even when Kellie tried to help. She's been told that she's nobody and that she doesn't matter. Because of what she's received from her mother, she now imitates and fires off put-downs and insults at you. Tamika: (surprised) Wow, I never knew that. Whit: Tamika, Kellie is hurting a lot. Aside from all the physical abuse she received, Kellie also dealt with a lot of emotional abuse. She needs your love and kindness now more than ever. That doesn't excuse her behavior, but it does explain it. Tamika: (touched) I guess you're right.
(Setting - Night at the Washington house)
(Tamika runs up to Kellie just as she's closing her bedroom door) Tamika: Kellie! Kellie: Wha-Tamika, what do you want? Tamika: I just wanted to tell you I'm sorry for arguing with you and leaving you out of things. It wasn't very kind. Kellie: (sarcastically) It's what you're good at, right? Tamika: (persistently) I really am sorry, Kellie. If you still want to come, you can. I also want you to know that I'm praying for you. Kellie: Why? That won't change anything. Tamika: (smiling) Oh, you never know. Kellie: (quiet) Okay. Thanks. (they stare at the floor in silence) Kellie: Tamika? Tamika: Yeah? Kellie: Your friend's not dumb. Tamika: Yeah, she's not. Remember, the offer's open if you want to come. Kellie: Maybe. Goodnight, Tamika. (she closes the door, walks over to her bed, and sits on it, thinking) Kellie: (reflectively) Huh, she didn't argue back. I almost wish she would pick a fight. This is too weird. Maybe things are changing. (Kellie falls asleep)
