Okay guys so I’ve been thinking about the Island of Doctor Moreau story & the 100 the past few days & brought it up in my group chat…it turns out I wasn’t the only one thinking about this @foghthatsme had also been thinking about it
So the 100 at its core is about the shades of gray in morality, politics, how far is to far? It’s about the messy bits of humanity really the good & the bad.
Doctor Moreau is as I’m sure you’ve realized by now a very old book by H.G. Wells that’s all about morality & when has science/ man gone to far? What lines should we never dare to cross etc
If you haven’t checked the above link & if you don’t have a tots nerd for a dad that told you all about the story when you were probably to young to know it let me give you the run down:
Dude is in a shipwreck is rescued by a man named Montgomery & a boat of other dudes they take him to the island they work/live on : the Island of Doctor Moreau
come to find out doctor M moved to the island because people were starting to figure out what he was experimenting with & on & he had to hideout to complete his barbaric research enter: the beast folk, half human / half animal hybrids that turn out to actually be animals given gene therapy treatments to be turned into “civilized men” they are then given the law of not killing or eating each other that is enforced by the “sayer” & threatened with torture & death if they try to “regress” back to their animal ways.
As you can guess things do not turn out well for Doctor M ,the dude, or the beast folk…. it’s a grim tale my friends.
Now that that is out of the way here’s why I’ve been thinking about it:
Doctor Moreau/Montgomery his assistant: = Becca & her assistant ALIE & Also: Dr Abby Griffin & Her assistant Dr. Jackson. now I don’t believe Becca, Abby or Jackson intend to be barbaric mad doctors experimenting on unwilling subjects like Dr Tsing from Mount Weather, we already know they possess empathy & a moral code, but even in the new clip from ep 4.5 you see Abby snap at Jackson when he tries to tell her to let Luna rest, that they’ve already taken to much blood from her etc. Abby is about to run into her own personal ethics crisis guys.
The Island: I was already getting a bit of a Lost vibe from this (a show that also borrowed quite a lot of story from Doctor Moreau) the fact that the island is heavily protected by drones & the very foreshadowing line Emori says in ep 4.4 “there are worse things on this island than drones” dun dun dun but what could it be?
Mutants: Yep radiation therapy gone wrong, like remember how grounders reject & hate mutants? What if it started with becca? Not radiation from just being on the ground?
I see two ways this could go:
Becca came back to earth gave everyone gene therapy so they could live on a irradiated planet. What if not everyone took to the serum the same? What if it caused mutations to the host or if it caused them do have mutated offspring? Becca was trying to help repopulate the earth so what if she “rejected” these people and they just defected to the dead zone? But also she needed tech/supplies etc so that’s how she had a relationship with groups Like Emoris, they would scavenge for her but like in Doctor Moreau one of them ended up turning on her maybe even killing her but there’s also no way that lab was built after the bombs which leads to scenario two:
It happened before she went to space to escape Alie, she was working on gene therapy before & how to safely live with radiation or something science-y & the same scenario occurred except now 100 years later it’s mutants on the island that are descendants of Beccas experimentations with people’s genes and this is why no one wants to mix blood with someone like Emori, why they leave their kids born that way to die. Also remember the creepy guy Octavia sees from ep 2.1?!?!!!
No there may actually be no mutants or anything quite that wild lol but I still think they are making this moral/ ethics quandary happen with doctors on an island at least as a homage to the H.G. Wells book (who also happens to be Wells Jaha’s namesake guys)
I haven’t read the book or seen the movie in like 15 years so I defer to @foghthatsme Please add your thoughts ideas parallels etc to this post sir!
And that goes for any of you fellows meta peoples too :)
