Example of Beck and Taaffe Dialogue

Since I mentioned that Taaffe acts more like a sister to Beck than a proper mom and how she's kinda bad at being a mom but not like evil, I tried to come up with an example of what I meant. It's pretty easy for imaginations to run wild after all. I came up with this in like three minutes so excuse the quality.

Disclaimer, Beck does not have an eating disorder or anything. He literally just does not want to eat Taaffe's cooking to piss her off. If he got served this at school or she wasn't around he'd eat it no issue, even if he thought it was mid or boring cooking. He just can't help but put her down for making him uncreative/easy meals and always points out the imperfections. Taaffe meanwhile curses without any true malice but of course that's still not appropriate even if neither cares.

(Taaffe puts down a plate of food. Beck sits at the table arms crossed, already irritated)

Beck: I am not eating that.

(Taaffe looks at him in disbelief, knowing its going to be a shitshow)

Taaffe: Why???

Beck: It looks disgusting.

Taaffe: You ate this last week???

Beck: I. Don't. Want it!

Taaffe: You can't be fucking serious.

Beck: I will not eat food made by an old hag.

Taaffe: You brat?!?! I'm twenty-six!

Beck: OLD HAG.

Taaffe: Bitch?!?

Beck: Only fat people would eat this slop.

Taaffe: It's a bacon omelet?!?!

Beck: I. DON'T. WANT. IT.

And then they argue for ten minutes while insulting each other until Beck goes to his room and then eats the omelet in the middle of the night. Then Taaffe catches him and they bicker for another two and Taaffe screams into her pillow.

Crystallization Syndrome

Unofficial name for the chronic illness that Beck and Star's families have.

Beck and Star are both part of the Sugar Crystal family. Although called the Sugar Crystal family, they are not all sugar crystal types of Sugars. More accurately they are all sugar candy, each branch being a different type of sugar candy. Although not all of them are sugar crystal Sugars, the family is called so because the sugar candy they are derived from are all those hard crystal/rock types of candy (think jolly rancher, those stick of sugar crystals, ring pops, etc.).

Candy terminology aside, the Sugar Crystal family has an illness that runs in the family. Basically “crystals” will grow on them and their body parts will "crystallize". In actuality it’s more like, the “sugar” that makes up the body of the Sugar Folk stiffens and instead of growing proper flesh just grows regular, pure “sugar” that is similar to a crystal. Even if you try to remove the crystal, your skin won’t return to normal and in some cases it’ll just grow back. Like the horns on Beck’s head. Even if he snaps them off, unless he completely removes the affected flesh, the crystal will grow back. In other words, you have to amputate or gouge out the affected areas to “cure” it. The severity depends on a lot of factors, but basically, it's just genetics. Some families have it worse and it manifests somewhat differently in each one and even within members.

Take Beck and Star. Star is part of the main Sugar Family branch, being a Nabat. Beck is part of the berry hard candy side of the family, specifically the Ames (they are based on those blue and pink ring pops). Unlike the main branch, they have berry scents and their crystals are opaquer with a blue or pink color. The crystallization tends to affect them less severely. For the Nabats, their crystals are clear and tend to be highly reflective and speckled with color, although the main color of their crystals is clear/white. They don't have a scent to them except the natural sugar scent all sugars have. Most of the main don't make it past their 60s and usually by then, they would likely be covered in so much crystal or have limbs affected they'd be bedbound or need support for basically everything. Star herself already has had both of her legs partially crystallize and needs a wheelchair to get around comfortably.

On Replacing Limbs

Something to note is that Sugar Folk are kinda good at healing because they are sort of like advanced sugar blobs. If they lose a limb in most cases they'd be able to get it put back on as long so long as the damage wasn't so severe or their bodies didn't reject it for some reason. I think I said they were sort of like the gems from HnK and that's why. It really ain't the same but, their bodies are pretty much equally as easy to "fix". They have like actual organs and stuff and those aren't as easy to fix but basically everything else can either be replaced with "pure sugar" or reattached. I failed bio so don't take any science I use as solid canon, their bodies can do what I want them to do and that may not follow the physiology logic I explain from time to time. Anyways, pure sugar is sort of like stem cells on crack. If you apply it to a wound it can repair it and even restore entire missing chunks- just fill in the hole. If you want to completely repair a missing limb, that isn't as easy and you basically have to sculpt a new limb and make sure all the nerves are there or else you'll just have a limb you can't move. Also their nerves are not at all like ours which makes this process so much easier.

So, in relation to the illness Beck and Star have. If they really wanted to, they could cut off the crystal and use pure sugar to repair their skin/limbs but usually this isn't done except in some cases where it might otherwise straight up kill a Sugar if you don't. Pure sugar is easy to find but is there isn't that much of it. For "minor" cases, such as Beck's eye or the scale like crystals that grow on their skin, these would basically never get approved since, while it affects their quality of life or is uncomfortable, it isn't "so bad" medical professionals would advocate for the usage of pure sugar. As for their other limbs. It's a bit complicated. Denials aside. It's important to note that just because the affected area is removed, it does not mean the new area will not get affected. As long as they have their illness, any cured areas will always be at risk of being turned into crystal again and in fact have a much higher chance. Not to mention for Star especially, the entire process would not be easy or pleasant. For Beck, it'd be much easier since it's just his bones in his right arm but for Star it's her entire legs. I hope I don't need to explain why getting both your legs replaced is not something you'd want to do unless you had to and for Star it is very much not a "have to". Not to mention both Beck and her are children so they'll have to have major adjustments in just a few years as they grow. And that's assuming they could convince doctors it was necessary. Beck maybe but Star won't have a chance until adulthood because of how much pure sugar would be "wasted" in the process currently.

Backstory Idea:

In which Beck breaks his arm during the earthquake that hits the Kindergarten two years prior to the series starting. And how he’s crying like hell and everyone except Crystal and Bobbert just think he’s crying because of the pain but they realise he’s really crying because of the fact his chronic illness is going to effect the injured area in all likelihood.

(I mentioned it before, but Beck’s illness that causes crystals to form on him and causes his body parts to become crystal tend to affect areas that were injured. Smaller injuries don’t do so unless you get very unlucky, (like paper cuts, small scraps, etc.), but broken bones and deep gashes would in most causes.

You and Opp Have the Same Classes

Post hospital fight, it was probably really awkward for the two at school. I don't doubt Beck had many bad thoughts about Bobbert while in class together.

Like omg, I have to watch the guy who stabbed me in the eye give a presentation on how to reduce misuse/use of antibiotics to help lessen the amount of resistant bacteria. Beck is calculating the force needed to tear the muscles holding the eyeball.

Beck and Bobbert Lore 1/2

Current lore information.

Long and somehow both too much and too little info.

1. Hospital Fight

Briefly shown in a previous post, but after Bobbert’s accident (I will not explain what this is for a while, it’s just going to be vaguely called “the accident” for a while), Bobbert ends up in the same ward as Crystal (Beck’s cousin). A lot of context is needed but basically

Beck’s mom is basically a teen mom who sucks at being a mom (she’s actually very nice just kinda slapstick, so sorta like older sister levels of bad parenting). So she gets taken away around the time of this incident (not to prison, it’s more like she gets taken away for parenting classes). This will not be the first or last time. Mostly because of Beck later on.

Bobbert meanwhile has had their friend get sent off to some correctional facility as a consequence of the accident and their mom recently abandoned them (prior to accident).

Also… Beck has moved in with his recently moved to town cousin.

Said cousin is in the same ward as Bobbert who is recovering from their accident. The two hit it off rather well. Beck does not like this.

Beck himself is also at the hospital for routine stuff. Nothing crazy. Anyways, Beck is Bobbert’s #1 hater and he loves to harass them.

Wild fact but Bobbert was lowkey friends with Beck’s mom and Beck was not happy about that. This is important for something Bobbert says during their fight.

TLDR: two sick kids who have recently lost important loved ones and don’t like each other end up meeting in the hospital.

Back to the hospital fight. Beck bumps into Bobbert in the hallway and immediately starts to talk shit (he probably would have regardless but I think he was feeling extra bitchy because of Crystal). Essentially telling them no one cares about them and everyone in their life has left them. Bobbert usually doesn’t argue with Beck in a meaningful capacity but this time they say something that really sets Beck off (not on purpose). Telling him, that he should have been taken away instead of his mom. (Remember Bobbert and Beck’s mom were kinda close). Beck gets hella pissed off and it turns physical fast.

2. Beck’s Right Eye

Mentioned in a previous post but Beck does not like being compared to his mom, especially after he moves in with his aunt/uncle. Again, she isn’t a bad person by any means. Beck is just a brat with a bit of a superiority complex. She does do some things like befriending his victim (Bobbert) that causes him to “understandably” feel hurt but a core theme of his is that even if it sucks, it’s largely his own fault. Like maybe your mom lowkey/highkey is agreeing with the mild trash talk your victim is a saying about you and that sucks to hear but… it’s true? He also just doesn’t want his mom to like the person he hates. Which would be more understandable if Beck wasn’t the problem in that relationship.

The only truly good reason he wouldn’t want to be compared to her is because of her chronic illness (fictional for this story). Crystals grow on them and he deeply fears that! The horns and stuff are cool but he knows that one day he could get screwed over by it. His mom wears an eyepatch to cover her left eye that’s messed up by crystal. Her right arm is also messed up. As the author of this however, I will say this is only 5% of the reason he doesn’t like comparisons. Really he just doesn’t respect her and thus doesn’t want to be compared to her.

Anyways, during his fight with Bobbert, Bobbert injures his right eye. It wasn't supposed to be a permanent injury but Beck's illness has a tendency to affect areas that were injured. So the injury causes his eye to crystallize and thus he loses most of his sight in that eye after a while. It also changes color.

You Shall Become Your Mother

An unserious doodle of Beck after he gets his eye injured and realizes he looks like his mom. Believe it or not, he deserved it. Lowkey I'm not sure whether to give him pink eyes like his mom and have one turn blue later or have them be blue and then have one turn pink to emphasize him "turning" into his mom. If they are pink first, he looks like his mom from day one and in a different sort of irony, only loses that similar trait by gaining a whole different one. Blue then pink is more straightforward tbh.

My PC broke so no art for a bit. But I was working on a mini comic that somewhat connected to my previous post on how Beck doesn’t like to be compared to his mom. The mini comic I was working on has Bobbert (Beck’s number one person to hate on) wonder if their mother wouldn’t have abandoned them if they had been more like her (in terms of appearance because they are actually pretty similar personality wise….unfortunately). Like Beck, they do not appreciate comparisons-their mom is not a very good mom/person! It’s too much to get into but I thought it was a funny parallel where Bobbert and Beck both dislike their mothers but one (at least when younger) wished to look like them and the other goes out of their way not to. There’s actually a lot of similarities and ironic differences between the two in regards to their moms.
