He was a mess emotionally and mentally. It was so excruciatingly tiring, so always have to put on the mask of perfection when inside, your world and your walls and everything else was just crumbling. Jamie felt as though potentially seeing her in the woods or on the planes was going to be the hardest thing about trying to move on. Alex had moved on from him but she hadn’t moved physically. The size of Montana might have been massive, but the circles in which they travelled were much smaller. It was better for Harper in that respect. At least Travis was in Texas or somewhere else ninety percent of his life…
Jamie hadn’t meant to chase her off. Not as such. It was always hard for him to socialize normally when a good half of his remaining family wanted nothing to do with him. “We’ll definitely talk later.” He even looked earnest. This was the best thing to happen to him in days, maybe weeks. Maybe longer. He came around his desk, taking his phone from the blotter on his desk as he passed, coming to stand close to her. “Let me make sure I have yours. I’d hate to mistake a call from an unmarked number as potential spam when it's...very clearly you. Not an ounce of spam." He huffed a laugh. A bit awkward. Endearing, his mother would have said. “And then I’ll walk you out.”
