Francais du Jeux rider Alexandre Geniez was today fined 200 Swiss Francs (about a pair of reasonably priced ales with a crisp salad in a London pub) for aggressively flapping his hand at fellow Francophone and Ag2r rider Hubert Dupont.
Geniez, who had lost 1.37′’ following a crash in the latter kilometres of the race and was undoubtedly upset by the deficit which would hinder his attempts to better last year’s ninth place, was caught on film by amused Dutch fans who having just witnessed the aura of Marcel Kittel’s superior Teutonic hair-stylings rocket over the line at over 60kph, were being treated to the somewhat less impressive spectacle of Gallic handbag waving.
As if being fined wasn’t bad enough, FDJ today posted that Geniez would require ongoing treatment for his wrist, which could have either been due to the crash or his camp, post stage lycra-infused rendition of Fight Club’s Tyler Durden. Although he would start the stage, he was forced to abandon before its completion, possibly as much for the emotional trauma of the confrontation as much as the physical damage he inflicted upon himself.
In contrast to Geniez nursing his war-wounds, Dupont seems to have been able to sufficiently recover from the emotional turmoil inevitably created by such a brutal physical and psychological attack, launching the decisive move of the day after the descent of San Pietro that created a break of 15 riders from which stage winner Diego Ulissi would emerge.
