The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory//Guided By Voices
She runs through the night as if nobody cares She screams and she cries and ignores all the stares She wants me to come, but I'm never going there
Guided by Voices' 7th studio album was released on 21 June 1994.
36-year-old Robert Pollard was seriously considering giving up his musical pursuit after disappointing record sales and pressure to give more attention to his job as a school teacher. However, instead of spending money on studio time, Pollard decided to record songs wherever the band was practicing, in garages and basements, with primitive recording equipment. "If we're paying for it and no one's listening to these records anyway, then I'm going to put exactly what I want on them," Pollard recollected.
Bee Thousand would become the band's best-selling album to that point, and gain widespread acclaim (The Village Voice listed it at #8 on its year-end best of, and Spin would list it at #10). It has been cited as one of the best albums of the 1990s (Alternative Press, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone), as well as "the Greatest Indie Rock Album of All Time" (Amazon).
And GBV would go on to release 33 more studio albums (and counting).
