Sand Bee. Lasioglossum sopinci. Plain looking (though a certain percentage of them have nice red abdomens) but you will only find this bee in areas with open deep sand. Dunes, river sands, old sand deposits, and old sand mines. Not going to find this in your suburban anthropogenic biodiversity not spot. Sadly, many of these open sand areas are dwindling as trees move in and fire and other disturbances are quelled. And, importantly, we are farrrrr too anal about cleaning up sand mines at the end of their lives, putting in clay caps, and planting green plant junk on top of that. Best are the sand mines that are left as is at the end of the mining period to slowly slowly become re-vegetated. Photo by Cole Chen.
