thought of this last night and i haven't stopped smiling since:

so we've all established that fiona's hens are evil beings, right? for not only do they attack hugh any chance they get, but also any unfortunate passerby. whether that be enoch, or even someone as sweet as wyn. the only person exempt from their wrath is, of course, their lovely keeper. hugh decreed it would stay that way forever.

time skip post-canon; hugh and fiona move out of the children's home to build a life for themselves in a wee cottage in ireland. of course, her precious hens came along, too. and though hugh grumbled, he built those damned birds a rather extravagant coop anyway.

in their twenties, baby feirdhris - their daughter - is born, and she's possibly the most precious thing either of them has ever known. so imagine hugh's utter horror when he notices fiona carrying their newborn, who is hardly larger than a loaf of bread, towards the coop.

surely, feirdhris would be their next victim. surely, those hens haven't a shred of kindness within them to spare for even the smallest, most helpless being this world has to offer.

his fatherly instincts scream at him to rush out, wrench feirdhris from fiona's arms, and bolt back inside. but all he can do is watch from the window as his wife kneels down before a clutch of curious hens and places their little one down on the grass.

the hens inch closer, then closer still. hugh flinches, expecting the worst...

when the hens coo in awe. the expected malice in their beady eyes softens into something akin to wonder. one nuzzles its beak against feirdhris's chubby cheek. another presses its feathery body against her swaddled hip. maternal warmth and gentle revealing itself, as though something in them knew that this was fiona's baby, her everything.

and hugh wants to throw something, because after decades of trying to get into those hens good graces for fiona's sake, all feirdhris had to do was act all cute and cuddly to earn the title of 'princess' (with fiona being the queen, of course).

that poor, poor man is ruined.

the concept of hugh apiston quitting drinking entirely after his hypothetical daughter is born …♡

it was no secret that hugh apiston had always anticipated a son.

he was constantly boasting about the 'little rascal' who would one day follow in his footsteps - a boy he could teach to play sports and chase after in the meadow behind their cottage. once, he drafted an entire list of names with 'hugh jr.' sitting proudly at the very top (fiona, of course, was too much of a sweetie to object ... it was emma who eventually bullied him out of the idea lol).

in his excitement for a son, however, he never considered the possibility of a daughter.

so when they visited the doctor and were told they were having a girl, he was completely taken aback.

poor fiona mistook hugh's initial silence for disappointment ... however, that couldn't have been further from the truth. because within seconds he was wrapping his arms around her, whispering about how loved their daughter would be through tears he tried, and hopelessly failed, to hold back.

the following day, he set out to buy an absurd amount of tiny dresses, hair bows, etc! he was SO excited. he even pushed all his duties on their farm aside to redecorate the nursery. hugh carved flowers into the cradle (which he built, btw - i adore woodworker hugh) and painted the walls in a soft pastel pink.

some years later, fiona would watch fondly as hugh allowed their daughter to place a bedazzled tiara atop his head during one of their 'tea parties'.

it was funny, she thought, how swiftly their daughter had changed him. ♡

hey so i absolutely adore the hc that fiona struggled with some chronic body pains post-tcotb (specifically spanning from her legs and lower back), because i think it'd be such a beautiful arc for her character. and a realistic one, too? because i found it quite strange that she was walking around like normal in desolations ... you'd think she would have sustained some long-term injuries from falling off a steep cliff. idk.

but on that note ... imagine the potential for domestic fugh:

hugh offering his arm each time he notices even the slightest falter in fiona's steps.

hugh carrying fiona bridal style whenever they have to walk long stretches along the beach. his arms ache something fierce by the end of the day, but he doesn't care.

hugh giving fiona soothing massages whenever she aches, feeling her body once taut with tension melt into his.

hugh laying down alongside fiona in her bed all day whenever the pain leaves her unable to do much of anything, so he can keep her company.

hugh kissing fiona atop her head whenever she expresses fear of being a 'burden'. because what she fails to understand is how much he loves being the one to care for her, as it's a much-needed reminder that she made it back to him, scars and all. ♡
