This is a bit random but you are a Lannister Expert™ and I was wondering if you know how long Tyrion's hair is? I'm planning on drawing the Lannister siblings next (hopefully) but I just can't seem to be able to find any info apart from Jon saying that it was lank & was in his eyes. If the hair length isn't given would you have any guess given his status and family? (I'm sorry if this is a silly question, the majority of my saved phys. description quotes died w/ my computer orz)
Hi! The text mostly talks about Tyrion’s hair being towhead white / white+black and very straight and thin (while Lannisters like Jaime and Cersei have very curly and thick hair). I don’t know of any passage in the text that definitively specifies Tyrion’s hair length. (Maybe I’ve missed something?)
In a lot of official artwork for calendars / graphic novels / figurines on GRRM’s website, however, Tyrion has longer hair, like chin-length or shoulder-length.
In terms of real hairstyles during the Middle Ages, men’s hair length seems to have varied a lot over the years; sometimes close-cropped hair was popular at court, while at other times longer hair was in fashion. One of the books I was using to research medieval fashion discussed how during the War of the Roses, shoulder length hair was popularized by Henry VII, but I can’t remember which book it was now.
I personally believe it’s the style for Lannister men to wear their hair about shoulder-length. I say this because Jaime is pretty much always shown with shoulder length hair, and for him to be mistaken for Cersei in his youth, he would have needed long hair. Daven’s hair is said to be very long after a year of mourning, so I think it wasn’t short to begin with. In The Hedge Knight graphic novel, Lord Damon Lannister is shown to wear his hair long. Interestingly, the illustrated edition of AGOT shows Tywin having long hair that is remarkably similar to Tyrion’s “lank” hair at the time of Robert’s Rebellion.
(Obviously Tywin later shaved his head so people wouldn’t see he was going bald, and Kevan, who is going bald, cut his hair short instead of shaving it, but I think these reactions are more about personal vanity and the onset of middle age rather than a shift in prevailing fashions at Tywin’s court.)
Textually lot of Reachermen wear their hair at the shoulder, and I think there’s a lot of cultural intermingling between the Reach and the Westerlands, so I personally go with longer hairstyles when I’m imagining characters like Tyrion Lannister. I hope that helps!
