Monnika’s gentle touch and silvery laughter were pleasant, to say the least. To Leiftan, though, they did not quite camouflage the smell of death embedded in her bones. He had loved her well enough and it hurt to say, but to see her face after waking up, displaced and disoriented in a world that had aged without them, was more than he could bear.

He soon taught himself to avoid her and she noticed, but there was not much else she could do.
