Honeybees are in serious trouble. Their immune systems are stressed which means they are especially vulnerable to new super-viruses such as the Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV) consistently found in colony collapse disorder.
Factors contributing to the honeybee's stressed immune system:
More expansive monoculture and herbicide use eliminates the weeds bees use to provide good forage. Also, neonicotinoids (neuro-active insecticides) such as clothianidin used on corn, soybean and canola crops cause disruptions in bee mobility, navigation, feeding, foraging, memory, learning and overall hive activity. http://1.usa.gov/LZ9XEl Foragers who become sick and die before returning to the hive leave the colony nutritionally stressed and starving from lack of nectar and honey.
Beekeeping has been increasingly more large-scale with an emphasis on the bottom-line for honey production. Queen bees are artificially inseminated for maximum production and bees are fed GMO sugar syrups as nutrition. The industry shift to almond pollination in midwinter homogenizes bee pathogens from all over the U.S. as bees are trucked into CA almond orchards. Urgency to fill contracts for strong colonies following a poor season prove challenging for beekeepers to stay on top of colony health and nutrition. All of these factors of modern industry-scale beekeeping adversely affect the health of the honeybees.
Another result of industrial beekeeping and poor colony health is an increase of varroa mites. More mites mean more miticides. Just when colony collapses were increasing, miticides began to fail leading to the use of stronger miticide doses and the use of multiple miticides (often to illegal proportions), resulting in a higher level of comb contamination from pesticides.
However, here's the good news. For thousands of years, bees have evolved a seriously robust and effective immune system. Healthy bees fed good pollen and nectar are amazingly resilient, hearty creatures that are able to purge infections alarmingly fast, even IAPV, and spontaneously recover. There are such bees now that are successfully fighting off IAPV. How do bees protect the hive from parasites and disease?
Beekeeper Randy Oliver tells us in his report 'Sick Bees' that bees are relentless in their scrubbing and scouring of all surfaces of the nest cavity and in the grooming of their body surfaces. They sterilize with antimicrobial secretions in their saliva (glucose oxidase, which produces hydrogen peroxide) and by making 'propolis' from the antimicrobial resin from a plant's immune system found at leaf buds and wounds. Bees use propolis to form an antibiotic envelope around the entrance of the hive, the inner surfaces of the cavity and seal all crevices coating the face of the combs. Each larva is isolated into it's own scrupulously-cleaned cell that is then lined with a layer of silk cocoon protecting the pupa from contaminants in the cell wall. But what about IAPV, how do bees quickly adapt to fight off super-viruses?
Since the 1960s bees have successfully fought off 7 other new pathogens: Chalkbrood, Trachael mites, Nosema ceranae, varroa mites, DWV and small hive beetles. Natural selection favors various forms of bee genes that adapt against a parasite threat or bee viruses. Right now there are bees that carry the viral genes that confer immunity to IAPV. We are currently watching genetic evolution in action.
This is what happens in the bee's gene: the viral RNA (the single-stranded transcription product of DNA) recombines with a cellular bee RNA to make a hybrid molecule; part bee and part virus. The hybrid RNA is then converted to DNA, mobilized into the bee chromosomes and integrated in to the bee genome. (scientific paper 'Tanne & Sela', Virology vol. 332 pages 614-622 (2005).
So, that's great! Then why's Monsanto f@#cking with the bees??
Because this naturally occurring genetic process is too tediously slow for a greedy, immoral corporation hell-bent on controlling the world's agriculture with low-diversity monoculture crops and industrial-scale beekeeping that won't wait for the honeybees to adapt. Monsanto, through their newly acquired bee research company turned traitor Beeologics, has discovered how to artificially force RNAi.
This from the Beeologics website: RNAi is an RNA-dependent gene silencing process triggered by a long double-stranded RNA (dsRNA is a double-stranded RNA, a temporary step necessary for the replication of RNA viruses.) When dsRNA is introduced into a cell, a specific RNaseIII endonuclease, Dicer, binds and cleaves dsRNA to produce double-stranded fragments of 20-25 base pairs with 2-ht 3? overhangs, called small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). (siRNAs are short or small-interfering RNA, short strands of RNA formed by cleavage by the Dicer enzyme, the critical component of the bee antiviral response). The siRNAs are integrated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to activate the RISC. Activated RISC bind to homologous mRNA (mRNA is Messenger RNA which carries genetic code from DNA to the ribosomes for translation into proteins) and cause sequence-specific degradation of the target mRNA. Positive-stranded RNA viruses are vulnerable to RNAi because the viruses replicate their genomes through complementary strands resulting in dsRNA replication intermediates. Since the genomes of most honeybees viruses are positive-stranded RNA molecules, RNAi is an important defense mechanism against viruses in honeybees. http://www.beeologics.com/viruses.asp
But, did you know that RNAi can be found occurring naturally in nature in plants, vertebrates, insects and bees? When it occurs naturally, RNAi is beneficial and necessary to overcoming viruses. That's how honeybees have survived for thousands and thousands of years. But, how long will they survive with their RNAi being artificially manipulated through Beeologics 'Remebee'? Remebee is an antiviral drug that is added to GMO sugar syrups and fed to bees. Beeologics began asking beekeepers to start test-feeding their bees Remebee in 2010.
Today Remebee is in wide-spread use with beekeepers all over the U.S. and fast-tracked for approval by the FDA. How so fast? Well, let's look at the players involved. First, is the Israeli virologists Ilan Sela and Eyal Maori who identified and named Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus. Then, there's Nitzan Paldi, Chief Technology Officer with Beeologics and the inventor of the Remebee concept. Next are the virologists Wayne Hunter and Jay Evans who both work in the USDA bee lab!
Randy Oliver states in his report 'Sick Bees' Part 4, "This is cutting edge science, not yet thoroughly understood, but great strides are being made. Any papers or texts more than 10 years old are likely out of date! The deeper I've looked into it, the more fascinating and complex it becomes, as we begin to grasp the tactics in the virus/host never ending 'game' of suppression of the suppressors of the suppressors." Then, "Realize that every type of cell (gut, brain, hemocyte) contains fine-tuned mechanisms to regulate the expression of each of the thousands of specific proteins needed for it to function. Viruses can muck up these mechanisms to their own advantage (Pacheco 2010). . . . further work needs to be done before we can say that we definitely understand what is happening."
AND THE FDA IS ABOUT TO APPROVE REMEBEE and there is already a new RemebeePro set for release next.
Let us not forget that Monsanto is a chemical corporation that remains profitable by inventing and releasing a never-ending supply of chemical solutions to agriculture. Biotech farmers are currently battling super rootworms resistant to GMO corn and super weeds resistant to RoundUp. New glyphosate herbicides are being approved as we speak.
And now, they are f@#cking with our honeybees!! Messing with the honeybee's DNA is diabolically dangerous and corrupt. Monday, Sept. 17 begins 'Occupy Monsanto Protest Week'. Let's see some signs bringing awareness to Monsanto f@#cking with our bees.
