The Year in Baseball Spectating
In the spirit of my trip up to Cooperstown this weekend, and in the spirit of "best of/year in review" posts, and because I'm packed and ready to go but am not being picked up for another 1.5 hours, my top five games that I attended this year!
5. Atlanta Braves at New York Mets, July 23, 2013. This wasn't even that great of a game. Medlen vs. Torres, and Torres gave up a homer in the very first at bat (which we didn't see because we were still finagling how to buy beers between the three of us because two of us had no IDs on them, myself included. Long story) But the Mets somehow prevailed, final 4-1. But it was a gorgeous night and it was spending time with two old friends that I see very rarely. We got drunk, pissed off the woman seated in front of us, and had a leisurely and pleasurable evening. Partly what baseball is all about.
4. Houston Astros at New York Yankees, May 1, 2013. I try to abide by the rule of "No Games Before June" and yet this wasn't even my first game of the season, it was the second. It was cold. But these are the best seats I had sat in at Yankee Stadium (field level between third and the foul pole) and there was a good group of us there for my sister's boyfriend's birthday (who is an Astros fan). Cano homered, Robertson came in for the hold, and Mo came in for the save for a final of 5-4.
3. Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees, September 2, 2013. Yes, there was a near two-hour rain delay. But it was Labor Day, so there was a whole day to kill. It was one of Jeter's only 15 games last season, so at least I got to see him. Also, I brought my friend Lindsay and it was her very first baseball game, so that was fun, too. I may have been more excited for her than she was, but whatever. Slaughter by the Yanks, Final 9-1. And we stayed for the whole. thing.
2. San Francisco Giants at Tampa Bay Rays, August 3, 2013. Flew down to Florida for the weekend. Obtained a Joe Maddon Gnome. Saw a pitching duel between Lincecum and Price, and the Rays won in the 10th via a walk-off homer by AL Rookie of the Year, Wil Myers. All excellent. Final 2-1.
1. All-Star Game, July 16, 2013. This doesn't really need a reason, or context necessarily (though there is plenty, between arranging for the free ticket and getting out to Queens and taking a photo for Joe Lo Truglio and his adorable dad outside of CitiField). Just this.
FUCK THIS I'M GOING BACK TO THE PUB!
I got a buzz from 2 Which never happens. Might have something to do with the lack of food Ive ate today.
This is actually EXACTLY how advertising gets made. And literally ALL AD's and Copywriters are named Zach or AJ.
"Open on three totally cool BROS (2 white, 1 black) having a cool time watching SPORTS on a sick television! One bro starts to freak because they are out of BEER (!) until another bro gives a totally “GOT IT COVERED” look and reveals the coffee table is actually a COOLER FULL OF DELICIOUS BEER! Whoa! The bros high five." Only very marginally NOT an actual script for a beer commercial. At least until Super Bowl 2012, at which time: YES!
